I just bought a Maverick 88 Security which I haven't shot yet. I know the barrel lenghts and bore have a limited function for skeet shooting. I was eventually planning on machining the barrel to accept chokes or maybe get a longer barrel. In the meanwhile, can someone tell me how bad that factory full bore barrel would be for skeet shooting?

I'm a newb and don't expect to do well on my first outing but would it be a complete waste of time and money to even try? If not, what kind of shells should I try?

Thanks

A longer barrel will probably swing better for skeet, but i've used my mossberg 500 with 18.5" cylinder bore (security) barrel, and it's ok. Skeet choke is only a couple thous restriction anyway, and at 17 yards it isn't going to make a lot of difference.

Thanks guys, bought a case of 7 1/2 went to the range today for the first time and it was a lot of fun. There was an experienced shooter on site who was very generous with his advice and I learned alot thanks to him. I hit about 40% of my targets. I think I just found a new hobby.

Cheers

Yeah took my 500 atp out to skeet shoot a couple of times, best was 21, but averaged about 15. 21 inch barrel, cyl, and no 8 shot. Worked well but I found using my buddies Beretta O/U with skeet chokes "smoother".

Pretty nice shotgun the Maverick, isn't it?
When I wanted a longer barrel I found out one 28" barrel and one choke was only $15 less than a 28" Maverick 88 with one choke included.
That's why I now own two :D

Maybe you are beginning to understand why "tactical" is so useless.

On the contrary, I initially believed my gun was useless in it's current form but it turned out to be atleast adequate. I would have hit more clay if I was better at following instructions.

Although, if the gun looked more 'tactical' than it does I wouldn't want to be seen in public with it. lol:redface:

I agree Legion, it's a nice gun, especially for the money. (or lack thereof)

That gun has a cylinder bore, not Full. In that regard, it is ideally choked for skeet.

The barrel is on the short side, but you have one offsetting advantage - that longer-than-usual magazine tube. That will add extra mass on the muzzle end, so I don't think it will be too whippy. I think it should swing with some smoothness if you focus.

If you learn the basics - foot position, cheek on wood, lead, etc. - the gun will be far less of a disadvantage than you'd imagine.

Have at 'er, and have lots of fun! And more importantly, bring your buddies!

It'll work just fine. I even use a dual pistol gripped mossberg in skeet. Just for laughs. I have broke a 24 with it but average 16-18. I shoot for fun not score so I even use my 4x full turkey choke sometimes
