I have a 1942 Maltby No1MkIII*. On the receiver and rear face of the bolt handle the serial is 91413. However I discovered another number on the top right side of the butt socket (above where it says MA Lithgow SMLE III*) and on the underside of the bolt handle. The number is R2061.

Why does my gun have two numbers? Is it fairly common?

First, your rifle wasn't made at Maltby.
It was made on the other side of the world, in Australia. At Lithgow. The MA is Made in Australia.
91413 is the serial number. The other numbers are manufacturer's numbers.
