Man am I confused, help pick a scope..*edit No longer confused, pics!

Unfortunately the Vortex brand has become a bit of an internet phenomena, with little substance to back up all the claims. It reminds me of the Mueller APV that all the RFC forum members rave about. At the end of the day a Mueller is a made in China scope and probably worth about the price they pay for it, but it in my opinion is no better than an inexpensive Bushnell.

Vortex has played a bit of a dirty trick. They brought out the Viper and I believe the Diamondback using scopes made in Japan by LOW. Those are good quality scopes from a good manufacturer. However, now they have switched to scopes sourced in the Philippines. Who knows how good those ones are or who is in fact making them.

I believe the Vortex Razor still made by LOW is a very good quality scope, and likely similar in quality to the Sightron III, and Bushnell 6500.

That said the Big Sky is a very good scope and has lots of elevation adjustment (60+ moa), showing that the 30mm tube is just a gimmick and not really necessary.

I have a fairly substantial collection of Vortex products that shows off most of their product lines. Any time you want to see the substance you are more than welcome to try out my gear. Yes I am a believer and a loyal customer, in fact I only own one piece of optics that is not Vortex and that is my Bushnell range finder. I will tell people about all the positive experiences I have had with Vortex, which are many, but I will never say anything bad about a product or brand with which I have no personal experience. That's just bad form, it shows no class.

Well my final idea would be to give Jerry at Mystic a PM, he has the knowledge and experience to help you out in issue like this without making you feel pressured.

I am also sure he would provide you with the best pricing available if you chose one of his products. Send him a PM he is extremely open and will get back to you.

already done lol, been chatting with him.

pizdets17 - Puzzles me why you keep posting asking for advice, saying you are confused, and then immediately start shooting the messenger. If you are so determined to buy a pig in a poke, then just do it.

you notice a pattern here? You're the only guy I am shooting. Because you don't actually have anything valuable to contribute based on personal experience not found on google. Please feel free to stop offering your advice. Now.

No problem. I'll do as requested, and get back to shooting my made in Japan 6-24x42 IIB Big Sky Sightron, and make more targets that look like the three consecutive ones shot below at 100 meters. Be sure to post the ones you get with your made in Philippines Vortex Viper.

Well lets do the math on it. 1MOA is almost exactly 1 inch at 100 yards. If it has 60MOA adjustment then that is 60 inches at 100 yards and 480 inches (40 feet) at 800 yards. Assuming it is near the middle of adjustment when it is zeroed that leaves you with 20 feet of up elevation. You decide if that is enough.

What if its zeroed at 100? Still sounds like it would be enough. I new at this as you can tell lol.

Google is your friend!! ;)

You have MANY things to consider if that amount of adjustment will be enough.

Go read on Minute of Angle(MOA) to start off with and the measurements associate with shooting at certain distances. That should get you kinda figuring this stuff out. Then maybe some reads on ballistics and bullet trajectory.

Not trying to tell ya what to do, but a few articles can do wonders for what ya need to know and may be easier for you to understand than literacy challenged folks like myself trying to explain it. :)

Assuming a zero at 100 yards give you the approximate middle of adjustment (ie. 30MOA of up adjustment and 30MOA of down adjustment are available) then maximum up adjustment would be up 20 feet at 800 yards. You decide if that is enough for the cartridge you are shooting. If your bullet drops more than 20 feet at 800 yards then you need a scope with more adjustment.

looks like with some great expensive .308 ammo it would be about 19 feet @1000m assuming I could even hit it lol, so I guess I'm ok.

Using 175 grn SMKs at 2700 fps you need 32 MOA to make it to 1000 yards. Remember you don't want to be at the very bottom of your elevation adjusment because you will have no windage adjustment. So long as you have a 20 MOA base your should be just fine.

What if it is zeroed at 200? The rail on this gun isnt 20 MOA

Talk out your butt much? Sounds like more opinion than fact. Just like your comment on Cooper rifles using cherry picked groups to be MOA.
