Those saying the guy should be arrested for feeding wildlife...how do you reconcile this with bear baiting :nest:

I would feed a bear table scraps (but no pies!) to get 900 pounds of bear meat several years down the road...

The bears in my area are normaly around 800lbs and anoy everyeone thats yard fence ect that they break.. some people get mad enough to take pot shots at them but with the no discarge within city limits ect.. lots of people want to get ride of the bear but dont want to get into the legal trouble..

That's a lot heavier than the black bears I've seen around the lower mainland. I need a good sized freezer bear so let me know where these tanks are hanging out!

Nothing good can ever come from making a pet of a wild animal. Wildlife should be appreciated for what it is; this cannot be improved upon. Wild animals are not companion animals. Wildlife should be watched, photographed and hunted by those who relish the challenge each of those diversions provide to our lives. The man who attempts to tame a wild animal only has himself to blame for his loss.

Well, after only reading three or four posts I am going to wade in and suggest that the guy feeding the Blackie be charged with feeding wildlife if the state has one of those laws on the books.
Silly bugger what was he thinking feeding a wild animal ?
What would he be thinking if this bear had gone after one of his neighbors or worse yet a family member?
Wonder who would be crying over that?
'nuff said.

And, who feeds the bear when he's out of town? Another reason for the neighbors to get a little nervous of this dude. Problem solved by a kind townsfolk. I'll buy the hunter a beer if I ever see him. Public service should be rewarded.

There are no "normal" 800 lb black bears. That is an abnormally large bear. :pAverage adult BC black bears run from 150-600 lbs, and a 500 or 600 lb bear will make you shcit your self.
:p

I really don't see how you can call the bear a trophy any more than shooting a cow in a pasture is a trophy. Shooting the bear because you want/need the meat is one thing but in this case my impression is that it was shot as a trophy ie something to show your prowess as a hunter. From comments made so far in this thread I am left with the impression that the hunter knew the bear was tame and had known so for several years..
What is interesting is that most of the people commenting would have criticized a person for road hunting but seem to be in total agreement with knowingly killing a semi domesticated bear and calling it a trophy

cheers mooncoon

Nothing wrong with a nice big bear rug and some sausage, it doesn't need to be an epic 10 day mountain hunt to be a good trophy.

Most bears in BC are hunted along roads. I don't see what the big deal with road hunting is either? It's legal and the best way to hunt spring bears for 90% of the BC hunters.

Feeding and baiting are 2 totally different things with totally different intentions. Pretty simple to figure it out, I think.;)

A bear 4 times the size of a normal bear, that doesnt see humans as a threat..... Someone shot it? wow didnt see that coming.

I wish people around here fed the bears.

Guess what, all you whiners who are complaining about shooting a tame bear -

BEARS DIE.

At seventeen years, how much longer do you think this black bear was going to last anyway? Props to the guy who waxed him and didn't care. A bear is a bear is a bear. Legal game is legal game. Any idiot who thinks a bear is a pet needs a swift re-education in game laws and the law of the wild. So he lost his "pet?" Too bad, so sad. I'm sure it was illegal to have an actual pet wild animal in PA, so he thought he'd circumvent the law.

I'd shoot the same bear in the same situation, no question.

Read up on this bear a bit more. It had a reputation for wandering into other people's yards and had been tattooed by NJ wildlife officials as a nuisance. Buddy basically trained a bear to be a pest. Nice work by the hunter in tagging a trophy, not caring what the sniveling anti's say, and getting rid of a problem animal.

Wonder what would have happened when Bozo the monster bear got old and couldn't hunt for himself, or his "buddy" could no longer feed him?

I would feel a lot worse for the poor man or woman who had an ill and hungry Bozo knock on their door for a desperate handout...

Hunt? Like hunting blueberries?;) I guess they do eat newborn elk and moose calves.
