Man.......I need a hunting partner!!

At first I thought the same thing as Ronecol, as most of the pickup truck boxes I have ever seen have been full of chainsaw oil, tree bark and dirt. But after looking closely I think Pickles truck looks pretty clean. I would have laid a tarp in my truck, but then again that would be in MY truck and its associated grunge et. al., Pickles truck looks shiny.

Congratulations on a fine bull (and strong back).

Any man thats packing a custom .416 Rem with Leupold glass, hunting solo in the YK and packing full grown Bull Moose out manually, surely knows how to keep his field dressed game clean ;) .

Couldn't agree more. Enjoyed the narrative. Nice bull too.

BTW....i also just added you on my list of ppl i should not piss off:p,any one that can hand load and field process that much moose by them self.. i dont want to mess with them:eek:

LOL! You may relax without concern....I don't think he'd find you good eating :D:D

Congrats on taking that contrary moose - a great accomplishment - and caring for the meat alone too.

Did you take any measures to dissuade predators from dining on your prize over night or while on your treks to your truck?
What did you cut the moose up with?
Did you use any hoists or blocks and tackles to help you?

that;s what us young newbies are for. any of you could ask us out for a hunting trip, and we will do as much work as you want without complaining!:D
i seriously need a hunting partner too. to teach me the art!

Never went moose hunting myself (mostly because nobody on this planet is crazy enough to drag my sorry, crippled ass thru the woods a few miles just to have to drag me back AND a 1000+lbs animal out).

One thing that pops thru my mind, is there a reason why you didn't cut the legs off and save yourself that much weight ?

I left the legs long for leverage.:D
Easier to carry them over the shoulder.

No rope or block and tackle, I just skin one side and remove pieces and then roll it over.

Funny thing about the knives I used.
I forgot my sharpening steel at home.
I mainly used 3 Kershaw folders and a KOA cleaver. And of course the trusty Estwing axe and a saw.
About halfway through I realized the knives were getting pretty dull so I went back to the truck to look for my steel.
No steel but I did find 4 other knives.:D
Sometimes it pays to be a packrat.

I left a sweaty T-shirt around the meat overnight and of course peeing on a nearby bush.
The first couple of trips I packed my Guide Gun but after that I don't think a bear would have come around with all the swearing going on.

I'll help you hunt! I have a strong back, and my mind is capable of being dulled with a few beers before the heavy lifting. I also have a close friend/relative who has about 100 pounds on me, so I imagine we could assemble a pretty useful brute squad for you.

i'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but i've seen pack carts with big wheels for such a job, i think they have been in the cabela's catalog before.

or a tinkerer could probably make one up in the shop, sort of a rickshaw hunting partner that doesn't drink your beer or answer it's phone when you're about to shoot:)

Pickles - leaving legs long for leverage is interesting suggestion. A little more weight but useful. Did you handle a hind quarter just thrown over the shoulder without a back pack frame? I wonder how many pounds a hind and front quarter might weigh. I realize Yukon moose are bigger than our Ontario moose.

I'm asking cause I will be hunting moose alone in a week or so north of Thunder Bay (15b bull tag) - just trying to refine my game handling techniques for solo retrieval. Be nice to have a little snow down to give the meat a little sleigh ride out on a plastic pull sled.

Dandy "swamp donkey" ! Congrats ! ... I've dressed and packed out a few... tough work even for 2 or 4.

Partners are good... but good partners seem tough to find. Finding a good wife can be easier ! ;)
