Man, we NEED AKs up here!

Have you shot one lately? Have your experts? They are crap. Failings start with the crappy safety/selecter, the slow mag changes and lack of bolt catch. Then there is the issue of poor accuracy.

Keep in mind that while they are in service with many 3rd and 4th world countries there are no modern armys using them. Hell I would rather carry an SA80A1 and I don't like them much either.

Still consider to be top rifle. Have you tried to shoot ak74? Newer version.

They are popular because they are cheap, and reliable. If I was in combat yeah I would want one to, but for the range cheap and reliable really mean s**t. I don't plan on dropping my rifle in water mud and sand before a range trip, and cheap doesnt get you very far in this sport.

LOL, Try hunting African Dangerous Game or Grizzly. Reliability is VERY critical. At the range it don't mean $hit, but I get rid of guns that jam there too. Not my thing I guess. I just hate junk.

You're right, it's not a great rifle...

But the design is over 60 years old, it was very cheaply manufactured in the millions, needs very little maintenance, and any illiterate conscript can be taught how to use it in 5 minutes.

And that's why it is great. Cheap, reliable and simple. If you're equipping a modern army and have billions to spend, the M4/M16, G36, SCAR or AUG series of rifles will probably be among your first choices. If you're equipping a group of 15 year old Congolese conscripts, you'll go with AK47's. Also, if you want a semi-only version as a defense or bush rifle (and can legally own one), go for it, even if I think it's a crappy rifle, who the F#CK am I to say you shouldn't have one!

As for the whole AR-15 vs. AK47 debate, I think both rifles have their pros and cons, and if I could, I'd own both.

Oh, and great picture, made my morning (or early afternoon :))

I've shot AK's, the SA80 (A1 and A2) and alot in between. When I was doing training in the UK the SA-80's we were using jammed more than they fired, and all the troops there hated it, I know any of them would gladly trade them for an AK. AK's are dated and not the best thing around anymore but I would rather have a crude rifle that works than a fancy one which does not. The Brits were always trying to get their hands on C7's and old FAL's

An AK would give us all a chance at being this AWESOME!

I got a virus warning when I tried to go to the site this is from, likely not worth checking out.
Well, you can: just replace the AK by a VZ-58 Short version, put a stuffed beaver on your shoulder and I guess you'll be quite awesome, too... ;)
