Mange - What to do now that I touched that mangy dog!

There is an overall lack of info on this subject on google search. Therefore maybe I will start a thread for people to put in advice because I think this could be educational!

My friend told me to wash my hunting gear.
What about the boots? What can I do with them?

How serious is the spread of mange and what steps need to be taken to prevent the spread?
Does he need to burn his clothes and bathe in bleach or am I being to dramatic ?
Seriously, look forward to hear what the best course of action will be.

I've heard you may get a brief itch, but that's generally only trappers that skin a pile of coyotes and wolves. I've been around and handled really mangy coyotes over the years and never had so much as an itch. Also, from what I've read, the mange wolves and coyotes get is different from the one foxes get, which would explain why I have yet to see a mangy fox.
 
Mites are the cause of mange and it can be transferred to humans. When I shoot a coyote that has any hint of mange I leave it where it lies and don't even touch it.

I know with my goats if they get any sort of mite or lice in the winter months 2 doses of Ivermectin clears it up.
 
The mites that cause mange in coyotes are under the skin.IMO. I would spray a coyote with raid when I suspected lice etc. before skinning. Shooting them is fun. Skinning not so much.

My best hunting friend gets ivermectin also.... just to be safe.
 
Along with the birth control pill I wish the anti's would use ivermectin shots on yotes so we would have more yotes in our area without mange.
 
Leave your clothes outside, without a host the mite dies in cold weather. I was told coyote hunters with dogs will give them a shot of ivermectin to prevent infestation but never give it to a long haired breed.
 
HOW THE INFECTION IS SPREAD


Sarcoptic mange mites are usually spread by direct contact from host to host. While mites can live off of a host for days to weeks depending on their life stage, they are only infective for 36 hours which means that environmental decontamination is generally not necessary.


Mite infections on humans are self-limiting (i.e., they go away on their own) as the mite is not able to complete its life cycle on the "wrong" host. The condition is extremely itchy, though, while it lasts. The mites are most active where skin is warm (in bed and where clothing is snug).


IF A SARCOPTIC MANGE ANIMAL IS PRESENT IN THE HOME,
IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO WASH ANY BEDDING IN
THE WASHING MACHINE (OR REPLACE WITH NEW BEDDING),
AND WASH ANY COLLARS OR HARNESSES.
