Manitoba centerfire deerhunters

I had several opportunities at a few small bucks. But I'm waiting for a big boy to walk on by! We heard quite a few shots today, but they were not close to where we were hunting, so I'm not sure what kind of animals were taken. It sure was beautiful weather, though!

Took a 3 point buck yesterday. Nothing really to brag about a rack wise but a huge body and we needed more deer meat for the winter. I"ll post all the details later as I gotta cut meat this morning. Suffice it say though that rut is on big time in the SE. I had a ton of fun yesterday.

No luck yet for me....

Just got a glimpse of something I would have shot. I was heading out on the quad to my stand on my parents farm. As you leave the yard you go up a big hill. I always look to my left to see if there is anything on the 5 acre patch of alfalfa just behind the barn 200 yards from the house. Low and behold grazing on the grass shoots at the bottom of the hill is a shooter. He looked at me as I looked at him. I kept going but slowly veered off to my right to get behind the hill. Stopped the quad but kept the engine running hoping. Chambered a round hoping he would still be there. Fat chance he made his move. I let him go instead of firing. Hopefully, I will get another glimpse of him. Until next time.

Besides that, I have heard of a large, nontypical, 22 points total, that appears to be grossing at over 220 shot not to far from the farm. There may also be another lurking around I heard today, Maybe I may have a chance at the lord of the jungle.

Well I'm back hunting was very slow and windy.Monday morning started off with my daughter (243) harvesting a little one.Better her than the oodles of yotes out there 150yd. shot off my shoulder all that was showing was the head and neck I told her to aim on the white patch, and down it went she was quite happy having not getting skunked again.Tuesday morning was very slow didn't see a deer till 4pm great suntanning weather though.Wednesday morning is when I got this guy 8:40 am had a bigger one go by half hour earlier the damn wind was shaking the tree stand so bad I was waiting for it to calm down and it never happened as he slipped off into the willows. This guy comes out managed to get him but you would not believe how hard it is to shoot from a swaying treestand.Anyways seen 11 deer in total in 2.5 days managed to get two.The others were either going like hell through the bush or too far away. This is off the 160 acres I purchased this year so yeah he is quite a special buck for me.

So here's the story from Monday...

Just before lunch my brother and I were standing outside the bush after a push. Judging by the van we saw on the road shortly after we assume some road hunters spooked up a doe and big buck that ran about 300 yards from us and heading into the bush we had just pushed. At this point lunch was cancelled and we posted near a clearing about a half mile down - the only logical place for the these 2 to come back out.

About an hour and half later I was still posted. I had a clear line of sight down this clearing about 400 yards each way. The only place I could not see was directly in front of me as I was sitting behind a fairly narrow willow. I rattled several times just to see if I could coax anything out of the bush. Just as I was starting to get nappy I heard something directly in from of me, out of my line of sight - kind of like a snorty wheezing hiss. I've heard deer hiss and snort at me before but this was a different sound. Then about 50 yards from me I see a doe running full speed across the clearing. I layed back onto a log and raised my gun just in time to get a shot off at the big buck we saw earlier that was following her. I figured I missed but decided I better go to the spot where he entered the bush while I remembered where it was. It's so hard to track without snow on the ground in the area we hunt that it's important to know pretty close where to start looking.

Looked for a blood trail for a couple minutes and walked a little ways into the bush. When I turned around I had a 3 point staring at me straight on across the clearing about 100 yards away. I raised my gun and took a quick shot (did it so fast that it felt like I was at a carbine match). He was down. We never did find a blood trail for big buck and I was 99% sure I had missed him anyways.

Now the really intersting part of this story is when I started butchering the buck the next day. There was the normal damage on the carcass where the bullet hit and I had noticed that the one lung was destroyed when I gutted it. But on one of the hind quarters I also found some damage (blood shot looking stuff). I figure that this 3 point must have gotten his a$$ kicked by the larger buck earlier in the day. If this is the case he was pretty persistant to still be following this doe and big buck.

I hunt quite a bit and shoot 3 antlerless deer every year during our shotgun season. But I have been away from hunting bucks with high power for about 12 years. With this rut action this year I think I re-hooked on hunting the high power season. Sure wish there was second buck tag...

Yeah I actually signed my brothers license after the kill. I have a nephew that is joining us too. I'm not above stealing their bucks...lol

I was lucky enough to shoot nice bucks on Monday and Tuesday, then on Wed. one of my partners shot a good one so we took Thursday off of deer and went and shot eight nice big 12-14 pound Canadas. What a week it has been, it sure is going to suck going back to work next Monday.
Well, up early for another day of whitetail tomorrow.:D
