So when was the last time we made it through the rifle season without a trace of snow on the ground? Usually by this late in the season I'm bundled up for -20, freezing my arse off and trudging through the snow. Man its been nice.

On another note, I'm working the night shift and there are 5 deer walking around outside. 3 does, a spiker and a nice 4x4 that walks with a good limp. These things are like pets. I can get 25yds from the doe's and they don't even spook. I just spent the last hour watching them eat and interact. The 4x4 chases the doe's around the yard and spiker eats like a pig. Neat to watch.

For me this has been the worst I’ve seen. Yes the weather is nice but the action is dead. On opening day there was maybe 5 shoots all day and usually you think it’s a war our there. I’ve talked to hunters and farmers and they say they see very little as for deer. Couple more days and it’s all done for this year...

I like the weather and have had no trouble finding deer. True that they are not moving around the same as most years, but you just got to go to them. My wife and I each got nice does with our muzzleloaders and I got a big bodied 4 point buck with the .25-06, and we saw lots more deer. The wife declined going out with the rifle this year.

its the same here in Sask too, its too warm and they aren't moving, coming home from last nights hunt we only saw 2 does & a fawn in about 30 miles!! Normally it would have been 200 deer!

A lot of deer shot and not retrieved this season. I would take the mild temperatures over 20 below any day though! We saw deer every time we sat but nothing noteworthy. All tags were filled with nice fat eaters...all I really care about at this point in time.

I did well in muzzle, but passed up the only deer I saw in rifle, a small doe, that I didn't think was worth filling my tag on the first day. After that, I saw nothing. Oh well, two deer is enough. Just picked up my sausage this morning from Dutch meats. They make excellent pepperoni.

We managed to get the deer we were after but the numbers we saw were down.
I have heard reports from some people in conservation that the deer numbers may be down as much as 40 per cent.
Seems like we need to follow Saskatchewans lead and implement a bounty on coyotes here too.
I have heard of 3 municapilities in Mb. initiating there own bounties.
There was supposedly an ad in the Souris newspaper last week for the Glenwood municipality starting a $25.00 per coyote bounty.

Let the games begin, time to put away the .270 and get the .223 out of the safe and the Johnny Stewart caller out of the rafters.

It's time to loose the second deer tag in more areas as well.

Gonna try again tomorrow. Last time I took the CZ858 for a 4 hour walk. The sun will set almost half an hour earlier, so I guess it'll only be a 3.5 hour walk. Perhaps this time I might even fire a round. Wonder if the Black Helicoptor will be watching me again? (Not the illuminati, this one was very loud, not silent, so I didn't need the tinfoil blaze orange toque)

Last day tomorrow.... keep the fingers crossed

and 2nd tags aren't the problem, it is road hunters and the guys filling 10 -30 tags for other non hunters that is the issue... as it always has been.

My buddy overheard 2 guys talking, and one bragged how everyone just gives him a tag to fill so they can have the meat. He claimed he shot over 30 deer in my area. I would like to see a guy like that loose his guns.

I only made it out on opening day and one Saturday last week. Missed a 4 pointer on opening day so I only have myself to blame. I saw seven deer in total: 3 bucks, 4 does plus one so small I think it was a fawn.

I don't know. I like hunting in weather where I'm not freezing my arse off but I agree I think it was too warm to make them move. I heard that from my hunting buddies: each had two tags went out on opening day, Remembrance Day, last weekend and during last week and only one had bagged a buck when I last spoke to them Friday afternoon.

This is the first time I've been shut out in three years. Mind you I don't take low percentage shots.

good luck to you guys in MB who have yet to get one, the snow should help a bit =)

(got my first ever buck tonight a 5x5!)

Well gents

I did not hunt at all this year. That bug has left me for the time being.

My opinion on the deer numbers is many. Coyotes, multiple tags, 3 week season for muzzle, 3 week season for rifle, smarter hunters with better equipment, lack of law enforcement in some areas, and those hunters who just do not care how they get there deer or the numbers.

Something drastically needs to be done.

The coyote population is VERY high. Why because the pelts are worth nothing. Who wants to go through that hassle?

My thoughts is limit the amount of tags a hunter can get, shorten the seasons or close it for a few years.

During muzzleloader and archery I saw not a whole lot. I got my buck and doe fairly easily during rifle. I had to go pretty deep in the bush though. Can't be lazy and drive in your truck until you see something.

In the Spruce Woods area the coyote numbers are always high however now it is beyond description. Also, wolf numbers there are way up as well.....Hunted 9 days there this fall in high power and saw one decent buck. I actually saw more deer than I thought I would but still nothing like 3-5 years back.

Also noticed almost no fawns....

Shot 2 coyotes and felt good about it...

Terribly poor action...went out yeaterday as a last kick at the can....nothing not even many tarcks in the fresh snow. Like the Mexicans say tomorrow...next year..good luck!
