Manitoba rut

We had a big snowfall a week before our hunt was to be, right at what was to be the peak rut season. Good thing for us the foot and ahalf of snow was all gone before we got there, but the bulls already had their cows and did not respond to calling for the first six days at all!
After that, we found a different area and got two bulls in two days, one was being called by an actual cow moose and he was unfortunate enough to bump into us while trying to get to her, and the next one Nugget called in within ten minutes.

I would guess weather has a bit to play with the rut, thinking we got here just after the initial rut had peaked and then we were lucky enough to be there when the few girls that got missed were being sought by the boys.
Just a theory, kind of like the Deer and Elk......

Here in Manitoba, at least in my house the rut is on 365 days a year. :D

It seems to hit at about the same time every year. During the rifle season, around the second week of November it's usually in full swing.

The rut is brought on in male whitetails by the amount of sunlight a deer has been exposed to. In Manitoba this is November 6th +/- 5 days. Early seasons or changes in weather have little to no effect on the rut. Weather may enhance or diminish the rut by forcing animals to move around (if its colder), or hold up (warmer weather) but "weather" will not bring on the rut.

By this time most bucks have bred at least once, and they are on the prowl for other does that have come into estrus. That is why the period you mention seems really active.

I have read all the daylight hours and rut hubbub.I disagree on the weather not having anyting to do with bringing on the rut.Last year where I am in Eastern Ont there was very little sighn of rutting the first week of the rifle hunt. This year with the cooler fall there has been scapes and rubs in my area for a week or better.Thats close to a month earlier than last year.So I would say weather is a factor for sure.

Hubbub? Far from it.

Scientifically proven fact that the rut is brought on due to exposure to daylight. Will weather effect the rut? Sure it will. It could delay it or speed it up by a few days, but definetly not by a month. Weather by itself does not trigger the rut in whitetails.

Never said weather alone triggers rut there BUB.It is a factor. As far as I can tell from last year to this year its a big factor. And yes the deer here did not scrape/rub till rifle hunt last year. They have been at it this year for about a week now. That is three weeks earlier than last year.Try and explain that without weather being the the big factor for it there PROFESSOR.Last year it was a warm fall and this year cooler than usual(flurries three times now).

Personally I like to hunt the new moon, or just prior to it. That's if I can get away from work at that time.
