Manitobans

You should be asking Winnipegers, not Manitobans. There is a hell of lot more province that exists besides Winnipeg.
+1!

there are alot of sharptails and hungarian partridge in the southwest. cartwright/pilot mound area. very few rough grouse.

Is Winnipeg not part of Manitoba?:p
My bad, Where do all of you WINNIPEGGERS hunt for grouse, within an hour or 2 of driving time?

An hour E or NE of Winnipeg has loads of good bush and crown land. Stike off on your own, find some likely looking areas of mixed spruce and poplar and find yourself a honeyhole. May take a bit of walking and hunting around but afterall thats the name of the game!

You can hunt ruffies up in the Mars Hill area by Libau and on up to Stead.
Sharptails pretty decent up around Narcisse. There is some crown up by Richer
by Steinbach have only hunted deer there though.Good Luck.

This is stretching my memory a bit, but if you turn off Hwy 44 at Seddons Corner, then drive just past Milner ridge, there should be an access road to the power line that goes to Lac du Bonnet. The trail used to be drivable in a car, and there was good chicken shooting where small farms had been abandoned along the right of way.

Another good spot is in the Belair Provincial Forest, just north of Stead. Drive north on Hwy 59, turn east on 304 and follow it to Stead, then just drive north, the road climbs a slight grade into Belair, you will find yourself in a nice area.

A third good spot is down around Whitemouth Lake. Get some topo maps of that area - there is a maze of old logging roads around there, and unless it's all been logged off, there should be good chicken and deer hunting. I don't know if the creek crossings have been maintained, but they were marginal the last time I was there in the early '80's.

A little closer to the city, you can head east on Hwy 15, and just explore any roads north or south between Hazel and Elma. I always liked that area, although it was never all that productive for birds.

One of the very best bird hunting spots I ever hit was at the camp ground on the south side of Grand Rapids, right on the river. There have been a lot of changes around that area, so I can't say if it's still productive. If you do check it out, the camp ground is still there, or you could rent a cabin at the Hill Crest Motel on the north side of town.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
