Mannlicher Schoenauer M.1908

You should hunt with your MS as that is what they were meant for! great accurate and a pleasure to shoot, I take my 1903 6.5x54MS carbine out deer hunting since I bought it 3 years ago, I always have my 300 WM when a buck shows its self, hope to bloody the gun tommorow, cheers Dale in T-Bay

All good food for thought. I have enough rifles to fill the hunting void. I just can't see re-loading with all the other rec things I fill what spare time I have. I've spoken with my local shop and am taking it down for an estimate for possible sale. With what I'm learning someone is likelty to want to put it to good use.

I've been to the shop and had the rifle appraised. With that in mind I was hoping to get some thoughts on what the realistic market value (ball park) of this rifle is before I put a price on it.

Did you take it to Reliable G&T (that's "Gun & Tackle", not "gin and tonic", although being able to make a reliable gin & tonic is no bad thing) in Vancouver by any chance? The owner and his son each have a M-S in 6.5x54. Things of beauty. There was a refinished (reblued) one here on CGN a couple of years back for something like $1100 which I just missed.

you are one lucky guy

those rifles are well respected as some of the finest pieces workmanship of any firearm ever. I have wanted one in 6.5 MS for a very long time. enjoy this rifle it is a true work of art.

I got a slightly-bubba'd ex-milsurp one off CGN a few years back; mechanically quite functional but someone had had the trigger guard and floorplate nickelled (?) and had some less-than-stellar engraving done plus it had been restocked with an indifferent piece of walnut. Also rebarrelled (as I presume the military barrel was shot out) but with a slow twist that won't stabilize the 160 gn. bullets the 6.5 x54 was famous for although it shoots 140 gr. just fine. Eventually I may try to replace the trigger guard and floorplate with unadorned ones but finding a stock for it may be difficult. the action is sure slick, though.

The OP is indeed a very lucky fella, although as has been pointed out, he won't get much use out of it unless he handloads.

Thanks again for all the advice guys. I really appreciate it. As pointed out handloading is my only real ammo option. Just not a realistic option for me at this point hence all the brain picking as to what to do with the rifle.

I'm taking it in later this week and see how it does.

Again, many thanks for the help.
