Sage International is providing a stock kit to users of the M14 rifle. Special Operations Command is currently overhaulling M14 rifles to the Mark 14 Mod 0 Enhanced Battle Rifle at the Naval Weapons Station, Crane, Indiana.

The standard wooden stock and fiberglass handguard of the M14 are replaced by the EBR stock. This stock has integral MIL-STD-1913 rails for the mounting of accessories such as the vertical grip on the M4 5.56 NATO carbine, tactical sights, laser illuminators, or optics. A Harris bipod is easily fitted or removed. The new EBR stock telescopes for compactness and has a pistol grip similar to that of the M16 rifle or M4 carbine. A cheekpiece is attached to the telescoping stock rails to give the shooter a consistent sight picture with either iron sights or optics. The telescoping stock has a recoil-absorbing butt plate.

A standard M14 has its 559mm [22.0 inch] barrel replaced by a 470mm [18.5 inch] barrel. The standard M14 flash suppressor is replaced by a Smith Enterprises Vortex suppressor that kills 99 percent of the muzzle flash. The standard M14 bolt stop is replaced by an extended Smith Enterprises bolt stop. This allows bolt closure similar to that of the M16 rifle or M4 carbine. A new front sight with a tritium insert is mounted on the rifle's gas cylinder lock. A 38mm [1.5 inch] MIL-STD-1913 rail replaces the the charger clip guide. The short rail (and the one atop the EBR stock, allows the mounting of standard telescopic sight bases.

Fulton Armory in the U.S. can provide the EBR kit. Photos of the installed kit and other details are found at www.fulton-armory.com.

There is another "chopped" M14-type carbine. It is made by Troy Industries by Naval Weapons Station, Crane, Indiana. It's called the M14 SOPMOD (Special Operations Modification). It is very similar to the Mk 14 Mod 0 EBR. The Mark 1 version production of the stock is complete, but Troy has a improved Mk 2 version that sports a telescoping butt stock like the M4 carbine, Mil-Std-1913 accessory rails, folding front and rear sights, and a special flash suppressor with an 18.5-inch barrel. Go to www.troyind.com.

I ran an Mk 14 Mod 0 EBR clone for a while:

Nice piece of kit however my biceps were not large enough to comfortably lug it around all ay while hunting. I wound up going with (and quite liking) the SAGE EBR CQB:

I have no experience with the Troy system, but quite like the SAGE.

They, Fulton Armory, don't like to deal with Canada.
Their loss.

Never had a problem with them, I have more stuff on the way right now. UPS rips me off with "brokerage" charges though.
