I've narrowed it down to one of these for a starter handgun. I like the browning the best but I find handgunners don't seem to like brownings for some reason.

I know they both should be fine pistols but I'd like to get some opinions from you guys. Thanks in advance

The majority will probably say get a Ruger. The Rugers are VERY popular and there are a whole bunch of upgrades for the Rugers. Not to mention how frikken tough those guns are. Mine with eat anything I throw at it and gives me about 1.5" groups at 25 yards with cheap walmart bulk ammo (keep in mind Im not the greatest shot either). Im sure the Brownings are good, but IMHO your best bang for the buck is probably gonna be a Ruger.
 
just bought my wife the buckmark a week a go and Ive shot more out of it than her i cant see any problems. Ive only shot 150 rounds but i really like the mag release button instead of on the bottom of the clip just my 2cents
 
I have had several of both. In the end it boils down to what fits your hand best. And which you prefer. There is no advantage that I can see having 1 over the other, they are both damn near indestructable, both very accurate and reliable. Flip a coin

Thanks guys. I'm in Nova Scotia, where gun shops are closing down all the time. There used to be 4 or 5 here in Truro 25 yrs ago, now ther're all gone. The dealer I went to doesn't stock any so I can't really try them out for feel grip etc. It's hard to buy something out of a catalog. I got a price of $500. on a new Buckmark Plus with the wooden grips. I'll price the Ruger and then decide.

If anyone knows any good gun shops in NS that stocks some handguns, please let me know.
 
I think you can't go wrong with either one.... similar guns, both with a solid reputation. If it were me I would go with a Buckmark. I prefer the grips.

Can't really add to much to the above. I've got a Ruger MkII that is a sweatheart to shoot. Been thinking about adding a brand new Ruger 22/45 also. Looked at the Brownings many times over the years but I still think the Ruger is still the best "bang for the buck". ;)
 
I think for me that is that the Ruger has a bigger aftermarket following.

Also once in a while you can find a very good special on CGN.

Plus if you have to sell a Ruger it will go like hot cakes.

Both are good quality pistols, me I like the Ruger

I've also been trying to make the exact same decision so I'll share some of my research with you.

At Store X (can we post non-suporters or what?)
A Ruger 22/45 MK III with 4.5" or 5.5" barrel can be had for 310$. MK III's with standard (non-target) barrels are 330$, and a blued MK III with a target barrel is 390$ or 430$. Rugers come with 2 magazines which are about 30 bucks apiece.

A Buckmark standard is 370$ from the same place, the cheapest buckmark is the camper at 340$. Mags are also about 30 bucks but the pistols themselves only come with 1 magazine.

So for a buckmark with 2 mags is about 400$, a ruger with 2 mags is about 310-330$ depending on the model. Not a large price difference so I would suggest going with the one that feels best in your hands.
 
I'm looking too. It's been suggested to me to get the ruger. I am a total newbee to handguns and the same goes around here about trying what feels good (gun shops closing and resorting to mail-order). My problem is that I'm a lefty. Can anyone push me in a direction on whether one is more ambidexterous than another.
 
I'm pretty sure that the magazine releases are about the same IIRC, being right behind the trigger guard a la 1911 style. The safeties are also in about the same place, again being 1911 style at the rear of the gun underneath the slide.

I know how you feel, same here in Regina. Only one shop in town, at least he has a fair bit of used stuff on display you can feel up!;)

Just ordered myself a new Ruger MKIII Hunter, eagerly awaiting delivery sometime in the next 6 months...:)

Those Rugers just keep on shooting no matter what. Great price and very good accuracy. One of my buddies has a Buckmark and it is real sweet also.The only real differance between the 2 is that eventually you'll want to jazz up your pistol and the Ruger wins this race hands down. Lots of aftermarket gizmos for the Rugers. My MK II Competition is almost as accurate as my Walther GSP was... and thats something.;)
 
Chose the Browning over the Ruger

After reading the comments about the Browning and Ruger, I went down to the store and checked out several versions of the Ruger MKIII and the Browning BuckMark.
The Ruger with the bull barrel looks very well made and has a nice feel. The Browning also looks well made and has a nice feel. The guys at the store said the choice is just a matter of preference so I chose the Browning BuckMark Ultra RX Std. because it just felt better in my hand. It was also a little less expensive here in Winnipeg @ $390.00 vs the $450.00 for the std. bull barrel Ruger.

I've had both the Ruger and the Buckmark. Both are accurate and they were trouble free. I did not like the Ruger because it was such a pain to re-assemble. I traded it for something else.

I've had the Buckmark for nearly twenty years and still like it.

Hi Dale, when i took my clubs pistol training last year i got to shoot both.i prefered the buckmark.it felt lighter,more manageable and i could group better with it.you need to shoot both to make your own choice.try your closest range on bullseye night.it might cost you a box of shells,couple of coffee's but all the guy's i have found will gladly let you shoot their gun to form your own opinoin

I just bought the Buckmark from SIR purely because after handling the Ruger I found I didn't like it. The grip angle felt awkward and that mag release is plain goofy. Try them both if you have the chance and pick what you like best. They both have an outstanding reputation.
