* Mark on receiver of a No4.

I have a No4 Mk1* Longbranch that went through India. It has a * mark on the top of the receiver. This would indicate rust in the bore. However this rifle has a shiny sharp bore. My question is, if the rifle was re-barreled would they not remove the mark?

The mark does not have to mean a condemned piece. The rust may have been delt with and rifle restored.

My savage has the same mark, yet has a spotless bore. I suspect mine was rebarreled.

Did I read somewhere about a rifle that had been in Indonesia that had a similar * mark on it?
