Hi everyone. I'm new to the gun collection and looking to buy an M1 Garand with 30-06 cartridge and a Kar98k as two of my first purchases. Does anyone know the current market around those two rifles?

I have seen ~1945 M1 Grand listed at ~$3,500 on the market and non-matching, non-RC, and pre-WWII Kar98k listed at ~$2,500. Are these fair prices?

Thanks in advance!

30-06 M1 Garand go from $2500 and up. Non-RC K98 are typically $1500 and up. Value obviously varies as wildly as condition and sentimental "value" placed on it by the seller. Seems all milsurp prices have been climbing steadily in the last few years

OP, you don't give us enough info to answer your question properly.

Are you purchasing to shoot or collect???? or haven't made up your mind yet???

If you're looking to be a shooter, there are some very nice rifles out there at reasonable prices that would easily fit your needs and the total for one of each would be under $3000.

There are some very nice M1 Garands for sale on the CGN EE threads in the $2000 range, chambered for the 30-06 and some new to to refurbished as new M48 or M48A or M48 "BO" rifles under $1000.

If you're looking for original "German" manufactured 98K types, mismatched or not then expect to pay premium prices. Same goes for Garand M1 rifles.

These rifles were sold off as surplus many decades ago or shortly after WWII were supplied as "Lend Lease" to many different nations who either used and abused them to non functional condition or often refurbed them to very close to new spec, then put them into long term storage as modern weapon systems became available and parts for their old rifles were no longer available for them in the necessary quantities to keep them maintained reliably for their purposes.

Most of the rifles on the EE are just fine and often put together by individuals to shootable standards so they could scratch an itch, then move on to a different venue.

Collectibles will cost big dollars and shooting them isn't advised, if you want to retain top dollar value, neither is "cleaning them up". Serious collectors want them where is as is and many purists will turn up their noses at them if they've been altered in any way, other than to clean off the grease and some won't appreciate even that much clean up.

I keep hearing "I'm a shooter/collector"

That's a pipe dream and there are quite a few people trying to live it that find out the hard way that when prices start to fluctuate, the jewels they took to the range, ran a couple of thousand rounds down the bore, then tried to sell it to "upgrade" find that those same rifles often don't bring the premium they originally paid.

Be careful to do your own due diligence when purchasing "milspec surplus firearms"

Thanks for the informative reply and all the suggestions, and apologies for being unclear.

I would definitely like to shoot some rounds with both rifles! I will for sure do my diligence and be careful when purchasing any firearms. A follow-up concern on military surplus from WWII. Do you think they are safe to shoot without extensive refurbishment?

Thanks,
