Marking Barrels

What do you guys use for caliber markings etc on new barrels.

Recently tried getting one CNC engraved with nice lettering, the guy promised it would be .007 - .008 deep but came back like only .002 deep, was not happy.
I don't do very many as it is a hobby for me, I have not purchased a good stamp guide and don't even want to try stamps without a guide. I have been looking at this etch-o-matic kit, it looks like it might do a good job but not sure how deep it etches.
 
Practice stamping using a piece of measuring tape as a bottom guide... right eyed, right handed - stamp right to left sighting down the edge of the stamp to align it. Practice...

The etch-o-matic does not penetrate much if at all.
We use 1 of our CNC mills and it cuts in .010 for caliber engraving. Stamps are so 19th century.:p
 
Guntech does a very nice job stamping, especially if he is doing it without a jig.

I am using stamps aswell but made a jig. I also built the etching maching shown in several knife forums but have not used it yet. I think the best job I have seen, was shown to me by a old timer gunsmith/barrel maker in BC. He just uses an old school engraving pantograph. It's quick and easy, and looks great.
 
Stamps work just fine with lots of practice, for those of us who don't have and can't justify a CNC mill. I should just use a jiffy marker on my own stuff 'cause God knows what they may be a week down the road......LOL. I had one rifle and barrel assy that in the course of less than 6 weeks was a 7mm Wby, then a 7mm RM and then a 7mm STW, and then finally some time later a 7mmX300 WM.
 
LOL, yeah I have a Remington in .308 WIN that has been a 22-250 & .243 WIN in the last year. I'm not even a gunsmith and still have a drawer full of barrels.
 
I would like to echo Guntech on stamping in reverse order if you are right handed. If you stamp left to right, your hand obscures the previous number/letter. If you stamp right to left, the previous character is visible. What I find particularly difficult is stamping evenly around the top of a home made loading or forming die
