I have one in 7x57. The receiver is marked fabras de Armas Oviedo 193? I see by your picture it has the thumb cut and the gas port hole. On the underside of the bolt there should be a flatish spot as well. The Model 1916 Short Rifle is an upgrade of the 1893 Spanish rifle. If the bore is in good shape and it is 7x57 it should be a fine shooter. If it is 7.62 then you should be aware of the current debate about bolt and lug setback due to inferior Spanish steel. My understanding of it is to not use hotloads or .308 ammo due to to higher pressures that are generated as the 93 Mauser wasn't designed to handle it. Before you shoot it check out the debate and make you decsion accordingly. I'm sure someone here, Gunboards or Parallaxbills will have more info. If it's 7x57 start reloading for it and you'll be amazed at how pleasurable it is to shoot. I took a nice doe at over 300 yards with a 7x57. A very memorable time and sold me on the 7x57. Thanks DaveM BTW if you are interested in parting with that rifle if it's a 7x57 send me a PM.
