I received an interesting little rifle last week. Its a Marlin 1889 Short Rifle in 32W (32-20) with a 20" round barrel. I looked it up and found out there were only 55,440, Model 1889 firearms manufactured from 1889 to 1895. A small number of them were assembled from parts up to 1903.
Out of the 15,440, 32-20s, only 9,030 had a 20" round barrel. The barrel is 20" long and 20mm in diameter which appears to be overkill for 32-20, 38-40, and 44-40.
When I first looked up the Model 1889 I though it was a carbine but it turned out to be a short rifle. It dos not have a barrel band, sling swivel, or carbine butt stock.
The bore is rough and the action is tight, only needs the proper rear sight to make it correct. Is there anyone around that can install a sleeve in the barrel to restore it to shooting condition?
