Marlin 1894 357

Pretty much "unobtanium" these days, so if he wants it, he'd better strike quick. Only caveat might be if it is from the early "Remlin" days when quality went down. I have one (c.1990) in .44 mag. that I really like and wouldn't mind one in .357 but the Rossi is about all that's available- and also around $600. Apparently the Rossi is also pretty good, though.

I had an JM Marlin 1894 in 44 Mag and a 16" bbl pre-safety/pre-taurus Amadeo Rossi 92 in 44 Mag.
The Rossi was quite a bit lighter and more accurate with the cheap Winchester "white box" 240 grain SPs which I have a stockpile of so I dumped the Marlin 1894 and kept the Rossi.
Sold the JM for more than I paid for it new.

You're not helping, you know... I'm already sorely tempted by the Rossi. I keep hoping that Wanstall's will be sold out by the time I finally cave in.

If I was in your position I'd grab an off the rack Rossi 92 but only if I could check it over and function test it in person.
You probably know the Rossi quality control inspector quite well.
It's the guy you see in the shaving mirror every morning if you know what I mean. ;)
The quality is variable and you never know what kind of gun you're going to pull out of the box if you spin the Rossi roulette wheel and buy online sight unseen.
I've fixed up a few very rough Rossi 92s for friends to use in cowboy action shoots before the cowboy action guys decided en masse to go the 1873 route.
I installed several of the Steves Gunz slick up kits in Rossi 92s and they are smooth as churned butter after that was done.

Given that I only shave every two or three days, I know exactly what you mean :) (Un)fortunately, Wanstall's is only about 25 mins. from here so I can check one out in person.

Cabelas has the 1894C on sale for $611, but backordered. Anyone find any better prices?

I recently picked up a JM (1972) Marlin 336 in 30-30 and am becoming addicted to lever actions!

I consider myself blessed to be an owner of a JM stamped Marlin 1894C.

That JM stamp is becoming a holy grail mark on Marlin's and you can get more for used than for new nowadays for them if you have a pre-remlin.

Just remember to file the tip of the lever sharp edge to ensure you don't get the infamous marlin jam! Just a bit to take off the edge.

Probably my favorite rifle.

I went to a local store yesterday who had advertised a used one on their website for $495, but it had been sold by the time I got there!@# I am wondering if I should pony up the $611 from Cabelas and wait for it to arrive. Seems like it's a good deal based on what I've researched and learned yesterday (see below).

I checked with a favorite dealer of ours in AB, who confirmed with their Canadian distributor who advised of the following:

Product 70410 is not in stock, in fact they have not yet been produced or shipped to Canada in 2014.

Production is set for mid-November and stretches all the way to March 2015 so I am thinking ETA will be Spring of 2015.

$699.00 and will probably change in one month when we get the 2015 pricelist.

Given the downslide in the Canadian dollar, it may go up in price quite a bit. Cabela's may have to honour the price they've listed, though. :)

Got a JM stamped Marlin 1894 cowboy limited...aka octagonal barrel, the configuration I love, in .357.

It's heavier and not as swift as the 1894c but I love this model the most. It was made some time in 2008 and has a cross bolt safety which doesn't seem to affect anything really. No idea why people, especially right hand people, dislike it.

Mine is the 24" Cowboy Limited, it is heavier, but man she swings nice and shoots steady offhand.

Now that is one sweet .357......Lucky bugger! I've owned the early Micro-Groove ones and one post JM one(Yuck).

The early ones shot not bad with lead at modest velocity and the post JM one suffered from gritty action, sharp edges on the receiver & lever plus canted sights.:(

Just picked one up. Sweet little rifle to go along with my also newly acquired 1895GBL :)

Id grab it at that price. Just went for a tour in my local small town gun shop. 900+$ for a 1894 in 44mag. Not a CB or anything special. What a joke ill be ordering online before supporting that BS
