Marlin 1894 44 Mag for Moose

Do what the middle eastern fella was doing on the fb video. Washing his rear with one hand and then using the same hand to take a sip of water from his hand and then repeating this over and over. Must have taste pretty organic lol

Maybe tasted a tad nutty with a hint of Madras curry.:runaway:

Its legal in Manitoba to hunt moose with a .50 caliber muzzle loader, which drives a 277 gr ball at about 1800 fps. When fired in a rifle, a .44 magnum matches that performance and is loaded with a superior bullet. That said, compared to modern rifle cartridges, the performance is uninspiring, and the practical range on big game is about what could be expected from a 12 ga slug. If you like the idea of a large bore rifle, the .44 is probably not the best choice, carrying characteristics notwithstanding. Consider that a 325 gr bullet fired in a .44 magnum rifle makes about 1600 fps, this compares poorly to a 350 gr bullet at 2600 fps from a .458 Winchester and over 2800 fps when fired in a .416 Rigby or Weatherby.

You can legally take a moose in BC with a .17 Remington, it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. If I had to choose between a .44 Mag and a .223 for myself or a client to hunt moose with, I’d take the .223 every day of the week. I don’t think the .223 is a good choice for a moose rifle either to be clear.

You’ll kill the moose but better choices abound, almost certainly within your own rifle cabinet.

Just wondering how many would say that a 38-55 isn't suitable for moose?
And then compare numbers to that of a 44 Mag...

R.

I’d be one outfitter who’d called it an extremely poor choice. It’ll kill moose but a .270 or .30-06 will be a far, far superior choice. Even a .243 is frankly.

Good points, comparisons and all quite true. Again however, if I happened to find myself in a set of circumstances of 'favourable conditions' and I was packing a 44 Mag, I wouldn't hesitate to use it on Mr. Moose. That being said, it's not a calibre I would purposefully choose as a Moose cartridge. There are a multitude of more appropriate choices out there.

Would think it would work fine out to 75 yards or so. 444 is back in production that would be better still. For deer I’ve heard 44 in a rifle does a pretty good job

The 444 has been/is, especially using top end loads with the 265gr Hornady, a deadly, dependable performer for me. With the 44 Mag, penetration with two hard cast 250gr Keith SW's going end to end through a decent sized Black Bear, has shown me what the calibre is able of, under favourable circumstances.

Who sells hard cast Bullets? I'd like to give them a try.

When I started out doing a little ;) competitive handgun shooting, I did all my own casting. The #1 reloading function I'm not too fond of  is casting. Get all my 'stuff' now from a friend locally now. Oh, the bullet I made reference to is the Lyman 429421 and I was using wheel weights then.

Right ..... One would feel pretty stoopid looking at a moose 300yds across a clear cut holding a 44mag.

A 30-06 would be a better choice for a list of reasons.

There is also a lot of people holding a '06 or whatever super mag they happen to have that day that have no ability to take that 300 yard shot, even on a target as large as a moose.

Moose are not very hard to kill, use a good bullet, put it in the right spot and that animal will go down quickly, even with a 44 mag.
