I was wondering if anyone has any experience and comments on the Marlin 1894 .44 mag rifle? I was especially wondering if it would make a good deer rifle.

Sure it would, but has some limitiations. Even though the 44 is a big badass cartridge in a revolver, it doesn't even carry as much punch as a 30-30 out of a rifle. So treat it like what it is - a handgun cartridge. Can it take deer? Of course, but keep the range sensible and the shots reasonable (no texas heartshots).

Keep in mind that this is essentially a higher-pressure version of the old 44-40, a cartridge that's (possibly) taken more deer than any other

If I was living in a place where I hunted animals in thick cover, or from a treestand, with ranges under 100yrds, I can think of little better then a marlin levergun.

for deer I would take the .44mag over the .30-30, just 'cause.

Marlin 94 44Mag.

Last year I shot a very large black bear with my .44 Marlin.... 1 shot 60 yds....broke both shoulders and found bullet just under hide on the off side....flattened bear like he had "the rug pulled out from under him. He never moved...used 328gr. Wide flat pt. gas check bullet cast hard from M.T. Chambers Supply.....with this type of load I think it is more effective on big game then 30/30....wouldn't hesitate using it on deer, bear, moose up to 100 yds.

The 44 Magnum Handgun has been used on Every Continent to take both Big and Small game:cool:
I'd think in a rifle it would Suffice for Deer ;)

C'mon guys, don't encourage finnigan, it'll just make it harder for me to find one. I know the limitations of the .44, but I just like the idea of having one for some reason. I think it's the idea of sending big lead out of a big bore without the big recoil. John

Bought one a number of years ago. Was cheap. Externally not much to look at. Kind of rough shape. Shoots great. Also use it with lead bullets for cowboy action shooting. For this I use a reduced load (as required for CAS). Full load with lead only (at least the bullets I tried) don't work because of the micro-groove rifling. Great little gun.

I have tried 240 hard cast but have yet to have any success with them. The last time I tried them with what I thought should be a reduced load they were shooting all over the page at 100yds. This was after I had cleaned the barrel really well!!

The bullets were spinnng after leaving the muzzle and made a distinct whizzing sound, several impacted the target sideways.

These guns work great with jacketed bullets. I have loads for 240gr hollowpoints and 300gr flat nose bullets that will stay under 1.5" at 100yds every time.
