I have a new Marlin I want to start reloading for ( actually my brothers).

He wants to continue to shoot 300gn to 500gn. I need some powder recommendations please and thanks....

Or maybe just some, "hey i use this and it works well" for you.

I have several books i can refer too but just want some hands on thoughts.

The marlin 1895GS I used to own really liked 49 grain of IMR3031 that was with a 405grain rem flat nose.

Note the recoil is a little stiff if yours not used to big recoil

What Jurban said only 51.5 grs. Extremely accurate. The 405 should be good for stumps, rocks and possibly Deer. I wouldn't go after anything big and nasty with it though.
 
Start low and work up, recoil usually becomes an issue before pressure concerns

x2 i almost never load my rounds to the max of the recepe book, the recoil kicks my ass, and im not any whimp whenit comes to recoil either (well maybe a little). The only ones i max out are my bear defenders loaded with barns 300 grn solid copper hollow points

...and i am anxiously awaiting the arrival of hornady's leverevolution slugs to canada for some serious hunting loads.

I have tried many powders and loads. That rifle and calibre is very forgiving, meaning it is hard to find a really poor load for it. The best light loads come with either 4227 or Unique, for me.
First picture is a five shot group at 100 metres, 420 grain flat base bullet and 14.4 grains of Unique. I take the blame for the flyer. The other four actually measure less than an inch, center to center.
Second picture. also with 420 grain bullets, is five with gas check and marked.
Then fired five more with flat base, on the same group. Note there are two double holes on the second group. The flat base actually made a better group, but again, the discrepancies are my fault.
This is a medium heavy load, the one I have settled on, 45 grains of 4895.
Edited to say, first, sorry for it being spread out wide, don't know why it did this.
Second, I have a 1:4 power Redfield scope on the Marlin.

Boo, how much 4198 did you use with bullets of plus 400?
In my notes I have 42 grains of 4198 and 420 bullet marked as a bit of an ouch load! It seems about the same as 50 of 4895.
I have heard lots of good things about 3031, but don't have any on hand.
A note to the light loads with fast powder. We can't say it too often, be extremely careful not to load a double charge.
 
When I owned a Win 1886 and a Marlin 1895 they both liked IMR 3031 in he neighborhood of 50 grn for a 350 gn cast bullet. For light plinking Unique was a great powder, 12-14 grn and the kids could shoot it no problems. Had to sell the rifles to help pay for the house a while ago and haven't replaced them. Found a .444 marlin for really cheap and that is what I use for my brush gun. I guess I should get rid of my 45-70 brass and dies sometime.
 
I have always used 50 gr of 3031 with 400 gr cast bullets. That is a wonderful load: accurate, clean burning and deadly!

Just bought a pound of 2015 and going to give that a whirl this weekend.

H322 is a very popular powder for the 45/70. And my faveriote. 4198 and
3031 are also very good.

25gr of 2400 and a 400gr bullet will land you in the 12-1300fps for a nice plinking load (still kills whatever it hits)

I've used the 350gr Hornady (57gr H322 2000fps, max load) for deer, bears and moose, works well.

Go to Midway, they have 6-7 pages of .458 bullets with reviews on them.

I shoot also shoot 420gr and 550gr Jae Bok Young "Crater" bullets. Very accuacte hunting bullets.

With judicious loading, and research, and a very forgiving shoulder, one can load the 420gr. hardcast bullets to 2000fps, and the 480 cast to 1900fps. These are the top loads in B. Mitchells' Journal on "Supreme loads for the 45/70". He used AA2015 and H-335 powders to reach those marks safely using Chambers cast bullets and Woodleigh jacketed bullets. Loads were pressure tested by Accurate Arms and found to be similar to .450 Marlin factory loads, which are used in the Marlin '95.
