Marlin 1895 accuracy

I picked up a Marlin in 45-70 about a year ago and have have had more than a little trouble getting a consistent group.

First shot out of a cold (but fouled) barrel prints 2 inchs above the bull, the next 3 shots will be more or less in a 1.5 inch group about 4 inches below the first shot.

What is causing this:confused:

I have checked the screws on the band holding the mag tube. backed them off and retightened with just enough pressure and a little lock tight.

I`m shooting jacketed bullets and different powders with pretty much the same result.(4198, 3031, 4895, Varget)
 
The Marlin trigger is not the best for accurate bench shooting, my best shooting with leverguns including the '95 has always been with peep sights. I use a Williams peep on the rear and firesight front, and now the only thing that adversely affects my groups is cummulative recoil, as I tend to use heavy loads with heavy cast bullets.
 
Ben, how is the warmer weather?:p I have shot a number of them and most would shoot very well indeed. Have a 3 shot target here that is well under 1/2 an inch. Not that they will all do that regularly mind you!
 
Are you feeding the bullets out of the mag tube? The more you shoot the lighter the front of the gun gets. If you single feed them and still get the vertical stringing it is a bbl heat issue.

If I remember mine correctly does the same thing but to much lesser extent than yours. The mag tube is fixed to the bbl The bbl heats up and grows longer,, the mag stays the same length. The resultant force pulls the bbl downwards.


On another note, my guide gun is the most difficult rifle I have to shoot well off the bags. The pronounced muzzle rise (from the short bbl, heavy loads and plenty of drop in the stock) combined with the slow velocity of the bullet (muzzle can rise quite a bit before the bullet leaves the bbl) causes a lot of vertical stringing if you don't hold the gun exactly the same every time. Also I sight mine in for 1" high off the bags which actually shoots about 3" high off hand.
 
Couple of targets with my older 1895 Marlin this is one of the BO S/N guns early 70's with the ballard style rifling and straight grip Sight was a Burris Fast-fire AT 100yds First target shows 3 shots then second shows only one after a slight adjustment. The load was safe in my gun but shouldn't be tried at face value in another!!!!!

as you can see they can be fairly accurrate
