I'm trying to decide between these two guns: the 1895 Classic or Guide. From what I can tell, the difference appears to be straight vs pistol grip, 22" vs 18.5" barrel and the classic is 0.5 lbs heavier. The gun will be used mostly for short range brush hunting. Just wondering what everybody prefers out there.

The guide gun has more of a kick to it than the classic and I would say it is from the stock design being straight on the guide and pistol on the classic. The longer barrel might be easier for pointing as the cowboy is great for point and shooting. Out of the three I like the classic the best and I have all three>

I went for the guide gun because its handy, easy to carry, and the short barrel (18.5) doesn't get hung up in the thick bush where I hunt . Just this spring I was walking thru some nasty bush chasing a bear, I was glad I carried the little/big marlin. A 22in or longer barrel would have been a pain in the ace.

It depends on the terrain you hunt really and what you the indvidual prefer.

Personally, I think the Marlin to get is the 1895XLR. It is a nicer balanced rifle then the guide gun. I own an 1895GS and an 1895XLR; both are .45-70's.
The longer XLR is just way nicer handling and nicer to shoot, then the stubby guide gun.

My $0.02...

I prefer the pistol grip(just feels a whole lot better) and longer barrel myself. The only purpose that I would consider a GG for would be anti-bear in the densest bush, which I don't do a lot of anymore.

I own a guide gun and I love it! the velocity will be marginally different and the accuracy is no different!

I went with the Guide Gun over the classic purely for looks. The straight stock i founnd to be alot nicer but if you have big hands then I would look in to a Larger Lever Loop because it can be very uncomfortable when it is shouldered.

I was not going to scope mine but I decided to because I was not able to see the peice of paper I was aiming at at the range... that is at 100m

So I got a Vortex 1.75x-5x 32mm for it and I will ley you know how I like it when I do!
