I would like to know if there is a preferable vintage for a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun. As I understand it, Rem bought Marlin in '07 and do to mass anti- Rem propaganda I am starting to shy away from their products.

Also which is more valuable, an 1895 with microgroove or Ballard rifling. To be honest I'd never heard of microgroove rifling.

These seem like good bush guns and I'd like the best version I can find.

Thanks,

IH

My 2007 Pre- Remington marlin guide in stainless is one of my most reliable firearms. I will never sell it - it is that well made. never a failure to feed, no failures to eject, the barrel shoots ridiculously well (at 100 yards- with a scope I am sub MOA with a stable platform to shoot off of.)

I watch, given the extra money, I WILL be buying another off the E.E.

Another GREAT bush gun is a Ruger Scout. Iron ghost ring sights are very accurate & quick, the short barrel makes it easy to pack in brush, and the magazine gives you a nice 10+ capacity with a rapid reload to a second magasine. The laminate stock is a touch heavier than normal wood but its because its durable as hell !

You can load up the Ruger .308 win with a few hundres different ammo's and still shoot up to a 300 grain bullet for big game.

Mine is 05,06 i think? Haven't shot it alot but it has had no issues other than adjusting the sights quite a bit when i started shooting higher velocity hand loads. Hanloads or the hornady FTX ammo make this gun way more fun to shoot. The new stuff seems like it is up in the air as far as quality. I am not a remington fan.

The rash of problems with Marlin lever guns really took off when they moved production from the old Marlin works to new facilities in the south, co-located with the Remington factory. Apparently few Marlin employees relocated so with most production staff new to guns, let alone the Marlin lever guns, it didn't go well initially.

I don't know when they actually moved production, but if I found out, I would try to buy a Marlin from before then, or much later.
