Good morning al
I am thinking about getting a modern hunter. The problem is, I can’t justify spending 3500 dollars on a tricked out SBL that really isn’t much different that a stock 1500 SBL.

I’m not new to lever actions, or Marlin and am fully aware of how issues they have had and co tongue to struggle with.

I’m just shocked that they are the same price as a weatherby MK 5 Accumark RC and want to know from anyone that owns one if they are really and truly that much better than a stock production SBL that was built properly.

I’m not afraid to spend the money, but when the dealer is asking literally twice as much if not more than a production SNL, one must ask the question.

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies!

I would say it is not a better rifle for the price difference. The stocks are painted laminate made to look like synthetic and the XS rail sight system can be purchased and installed by the end user so that is not unique to the factory offering. I just bought a 1895 classic for about 1000.00 tax in and it will do all I need out of a .45-70. I would buy the standard guide model and add the accessories pre mentioned. The Modern hunter does offer increased mag cap over the guide gun I guess that can be a plus. A buddy just bought a new .444 and quality control seems to be where it should be. I have not got mine in the mail yet. Fingers crossed. Is it just my eyes or do some versions of the 1895 have bolt flutes?

The SBL has bolt flutes, but none of the other models do in the 1895 pattern, aside from the modern hunter, which is a churched up SBL anyway.

I have a SBL that was made in 2019 and I’m satisfied with the overall quality. Some things could be better, but they are still a mass produced gun.

My SBL functions really well and I’m happy with it.
