Marlin 1895 problems

There is a spring behind the plunger.
Make sure it's there and not goop'd up.
Maybe tug it a bit to make it a tad longer.
Check the orientation of the plunger tip too.
Needs to be in there proper.

You could also slightly bend the trigger return spring as that is what pushes the little bar tab on the bottom of the reciever that the lever must push in to fire. Had to do this to my marlin with greatly improved it's function.

No need for a new spring...Just ball up a small chunk of tin foil and tamp it in the "catch" socket and re-install the catch, if it is too stiff now just remove a small bit of the foil, if it is still to "soft" add a bit of foil. It will only compress to a certain state and cant escape once its in there...its a perfect fix to your problem.

Replace that spring...you issues will reappear if you dont

I work in spring manufacturing and can confirm you'll need to replace that spring.
By stretching you might have past the working limits of that spring (Called: plastic deformation) and will only worsen over time, think of a hotdog sausage you can bend it, stretch it but if you go too far it'll break or loose its firmness, that the plastic deformation limits.
You could use a shim like some others suggested but the main issue of that spring might be due to bad heat treatment (stress relieve) or the spring has achieved the end of its life.
Either way should you use a shim the spring simply isn't strong anymore to maintain the load so it'll worsen over time as well.
Regards

I went with the tinfoil.. last night I was at 3+- lbs. to open lever after trigger pull
I added more foil and now I'm at 6 +- lbs. which I think is about right
My 2 others are pushing 8+- lbs. which is a little heavy.
guns arent used much so if anything they will lighten up

for Cowboy use I don't really use any "poundage" measurement, I just set them so they wont open from the battery position with a slight shake but can be opened with a slight effort of one finger in the loop.
