Marlin 1895 Trapper - What the heck is that thing on the barrel

Picked up a used 1895 Trapper on the weekend for what I think was a good price. Got it home and played with it a bit. There is this diamond shapped flat metal piece in the middle of the barrel. Looks like some kind of mount, which would be nice. A mid barrel mounted red dot would be great, but I have not been able to find anything about it on the interweb. Can anyone enighten me?

Te dovetail is for mounting of the leaf spring rear sight on the normal models. There do exist aftermarket rails and mounts for that location.
