Marlin 30-30 or .35 Rem

X2 with Why Not.35 rem is not hard to find.I can get it at home
hardware right here in town.200 grn Rem express works very well
and the Federal 200 grn is good too,27.00 a box,30/30 is 21.00
I like 30/30 well enough but the 35 rem hits harder.

I've got the itch to buy a new rifle next year, and I'm having troubles deciding which Marlin I want.

I've been looking at the Marlin 336C and Marlin 336A and I'm torn as to whether I want a 30-30 or a .35 Rem.

I hunt deer, moose and bear, but I have a .30-06 for the bear and moose. I just have an itch to get a lever. I hunt some pretty thick area's and most my shots are well under 100 yards.

I'd like to hear others opinions on what I should get.

I would get a Marlin 1895G, 45/70 Government. Its a nice caliber. You can't go wrong with it. Also you can fire a 410 shotgun shell with it.
BTW, anybody knows whats the difference between a Marlin 336A and a Marlin 336C?

The 30-30 kicks less, is cheaper, and has all the power you need for the hunting conditions you describe, for game up to and including moose and black bear.
Want me to post my 30-30 moose pic AGAIN?
The 30-30 feeds better, or at least, more smoothly, IMO
The 35, has more power, but is more expensive.
If you buy a 30-30, you will forever have to defend it from the 30-30 haters.
The 35, you will forever have to spend more on ammo, including if you reload.
Accuracy, is debatable, but, if you are shooting only at 100 yards, there isn't enough difference for it to be a concern.
I think the above arguments are why the 35 Rem is harder to find, and has fewer loadings.
The 35 is a fine round, but, it can't compete with the popularity of the 30-30.

-Slight advantage to the 35 in bullet weight and diameter
-Slight advantage to the 30-30 in trajectory & ballistics

If you're buying it to hunt, just get the 30-30. Ammo selection, availability, and price are all excellent.

If you already have a million guns, reload, and will probably resell this rifle at a later date, why not go for the 35?

.

Sure, post the picture :) I'd love to see it.

What do you mean by I'll forever have to defend it from other 30-30 haters?

I only have one other rifle. a Remington .30-06

30-30 haters, or rather those who like to think you need a lot of power to hunt abound. They turn up their noses at the little 30-30. They argue no end about this round and that being better. I like to rub those turned up noses in my success. The 30-30 has been good to me.

Go for the extra girth & weight that the .35/200gr offers. The added punch might save you some unneeded consternation when "threading the needle" through heavy cover.

Get a 30-30 I wouldn't hesitate to hunt any of the game you specified with it. If you forget or lose your shells on a trip just go to the store and get some more dirty thirty rounds. There really isn't enough difference between em to notice. I usually hunt with a 45/70 but have been thinking of switching back the thutty-thutty for my deer hunting.

If your going to keep it and not reload: 30-30
If your gonna piss around with it for a few years & likely to sell it: 35 Rem. Just stock up on ammo when you come across it a good price.
At 100 yds thick bush or not either cartridge will work on Moose/Deer if you hit em right. No bullet will be anymore accurate once its gone through branches, tree trunks or truck doors just cause its got 30 grains more weight than the other.
And unless things have changed, a 336C comes in a walnut checkered stock & an "A" comes in a hardwood stock with older ones at least, being embosed checkering.

Ah yes, a Campfire Debate if there ever was one. Although we should add .32 Special to the mix, and maybe Winchester vs Marlin lever guns....

Happy Easter everyone, and especially Ted! I reckon you have put in some serious overtime this week!

Now I am thinking I need to get a 760 rechambered for .358 Win!
