Looking at replacing my recently sold 30-06 for deer/moose ad black bear. shooting within 300 yards, almost all shots within 100 yards.
The ballistics on the leverevoloutinon rounds sure look impresive. Anyone have any practical experience with this gun? I am looking at the 22 inch blued version.

Yah, reluctantly I sold it at the camp this year. I really liked it and it surpased my expectations at the range. But I decided on going for a lever instead. Truth be told I never seem to be able to hold onto a gun for more than a year. Most don't even make it to the hunt camp. :) Eventually I'll find the perfect gun for me. I guess I could get a bunch of guns, but I am trying to keep the collection down to a minimum.

Of course it seems folks on this site have it in for the 308MX ammo as it can't be reloaded. Also considering a bronwing BLR in ought six or 308 as well as a marlin guide gun in 45-70. The few numbers of opportunities to shoot more than 100 yards pushed me originally to a 45-70 until I saw the ballistics of the 308mx....

I have one in the XLR, bought it in the summer, have not killed anything with it yet, but i like it, wears a VX111-2.5-8-36mm shoots pretty good, not bolt gun accuracy but well enough i have been even handloading 150gr accubonds for it, starting at a very low charge and moving up, and when you load them one at a time or one in the tube and one in the chamber they work fine, accubonds even with a reduced load printed better groups then the hornady ammo, and with the onset of the FTX bullets available to handloaders next year by hornady i'm really excited, as well as this new 338 MX they are bringing out, very cool. All in all, its a good bush gun, and i don't know if i would shoot a bear at 300 yards not based on the cartridge performance, but i don't know how much i trust the bullet, just a jacketed lead bullet with this flex tip, i would trust and accubond or a scirocco a lot more.

we will see if it goes, if it is so unpopular, why are they releasing a 338 mx as well? i have lots of brass, but the problem with the 308mx, and if it does go the way of the dodo, could be in for trouble as far as brass goes. I think it will probably gain some popularity if anything with the release of the 160 gr 30 cal FTX bullet for handloaders from hornady, i have been just waiting for these, but its enjoyable to have a stainless gun with the asthetics of a lever gun that can comes closer to a 308 ballistically then a 30-30. I'm considering looking into the 338 mx for another xlr, but the 450 xlr is a lot more appealing...

A guy I used to work with has the blued 22 inch one that he got last year. I dont think he has killed anything with it yet but maybe this fall. I guess he has only shot enough to sight in his scope and then a few practice shots. He says it works well and is accurate enough for him.

Sorry I dont have more info but I think he is pleased.

I'd want to run that Marlin Round over a chronograph beside the .308 before I believe their ballistic nonsense......just get the 45/70 and be happy!!

you sold your super tacticool snypah rig?

This one?

In reality, I think the .308 marlin is more like a .300 Savage than a .308 Winchester....in a traditional, brand-new rifle. I think it's quite viable, and if the "It hasn't caught on hugely in two whole years so it never will" crowd doesn't manage to kill it, it might hang on. I watched this same kind of nay-saying kill the .356, .307 and .375 Winchester rounds, and then after everyone waited to buy one "until they catch on" Winchester stopped making them. And then the whining started. And hasn't really ever stopped. I'm kind of shocked that the 7mm-08 and .260 did as well as they did.

Thas the one I sold, believe it or not it worked really well on the range and in the field. Grouped nicely out to about 200 yards, 300 was alot more bullet drop than what I thought it would be. Nice and light to handle in the bushes and was fast to shoulder. I have no complaints about it, although the eyepiece flipup cover did break the second day of the hunt.

Has anyone used a 45-70 on a deer and had any meat left?

Fair observation, but the Marlin 308 doesn't offer any advantage over a 308Win and I'm pretty sure the 257Roberts will be around a long time after the 308 Marlin goes like the dodo.

Actually Paul there is an advantage. Its offered in a nice rifle that being the Marlin. The .308 lever wise, is only available in a Savage 99, BLR or a Win 88. The Marlin is alot more pleasing to the eye than all of those alot of folks think.
