Marlin 336 30-30 for a first deer gun?

nothing wrong for your first gun / fun gun to shoot.at the right price and for deer up close. If your planning to shoot long distances its the wrong gun in my opinion the drop is huge Check out the( remington shoot free softwear)
it will give you and idea of the diferent drops.
if it was me i would buy it shoot it and buy more.

You can always 'upgun' it a bit and get a little more range with those new hornady leverevolution bullets - the combination of 'tube-safe pointy tip' and extra speed will give you a flatter trajectory and a little more 'error room'.

Lots of good places for a 30-30 in bc :)

The only thing that can go wrong, when it's your first time out with ANY lever gun, or and other repeater, particularly on your first hunt, is thinking too much about that second shot.
Yes, a lever gun can deliver a second shot very quickly indeed, however, if all you think about is cranking the lever, the game will walk away unscathed, no matter how much lead you sling.
Make the first shot count.
I've lost track of the number of deer I've shot with my 30-30, and it's taken moose as well. No elk hunting here yet, but I'd not be afraid to try.
The 30-30 is on the small side for game bigger than deer, but quite capable, if you put the shot where it belongs.
