Marlin 336 .30-30 with straight lever, what model?

I think that Marlin breathes new life into the old 30WCF. Mine shoots a 1 1/2" - 3 shot group which is much better than I had expected at 100 yds. Nice gun to boot.

No offence, but I don't think the old Dirty thirty needs anybodys help. It is still one of the most populal cartridges around, even though anyone you talk to will tell you it's a gutless cartridge, not suitable for anything but a hundred yard deer, if your lucky. But then, you talk to the handgun guys, and they'll tell you that a 30-30 chambered Contender is the greatest thing to hit longrange (300 yard) handgun hunting since sliced bread. I agree the XLR is a nice rifle, but I'm not sold on the LEVERevolution bullets. I would hate to use them when it drops below -30 and those tips turn into a solid firing pin. Give me a good 170 grain Partition, and a 30-30 that's sighted in well, and I'll gladly trust that rifle for anything that I'd consider hunting.

None taken Pharaoh. I agree with you on the fact that the 30-30 did well on it's own. But the breathing new life statement was primarily intended at the shooting public not the calibre itself. The Hornady ammo has raised interests amongst shooters who may have wrongly figured the 30-30 for a deadbeat. Point in case, Wholesale in CGY had cases gone in no time flat, Russel's had some and going fast. My own experience with it thus far has been pretty good. You do make a good point about the -30 weather though, I just put a box in the freezer, we'll see how soft those tips remain. :)

pharaoh2, after 6 hours in the freezer at -25C, the Leverevolution bullet tips were nearly as soft as those in room temperature.

That's interesting. So the question is, would you trust your life to them? If they stay soft, I see no problems. But I'm sure you can understand why I'm apprehensive.:runaway: Thanks for testing them. I suppose I might have to at least try them once or twice.
