Marlin 336 Pics and Info...

My first firearm was a 336CS in 30-30. My folks bought it for me over two decades ago and it's still with me to this day. I've had numerous pieces pass through my hands over the years (and sentimental value aside) - it's still one of my favourites... The only mod I've done to it was add a Lyman receiver sight to it.

hsld.

I picked up a Marlin/Glenfield 336 clone at the last gun show in Kamloops last April but all the guts are 336. Sights and wood are cheaper but shoots just like a 336. Winchesters are a little scary to take apart but the Marlin was designed for it and you have to respect a lever gun that allows you to clean thru the chamber. Had a Winnie and sold it but I kept the Marlin. Besides, I prefer the curved pistol grip hands down. If you watch carefully, not all the levers in westerns are Winnies:)

336

I am really happy with the rifle and for $500 I dont think I coulda got a better hunting rifle! I have a great passion for the 30-30 and I consider this rifle one of the best deer and bear guns for Ontario out there. Marlin 336 in 30-30 = LOVE

I bought one at the Paris auction last spring and it was the best thing I ever did. It was made in 1956 I believe and what a prize. Ive taken it to the range a few times and wow. It puts the hornady leverevolution in groups of 5cm at 200yrds. I think she shoots better than that and that I am the limiting re-agent.

Here is a shot of me last deer season. Didnt get anything unfortunately but we found this huge terraced beaver damn. Im showing off with my new best friend a Marlin 336SC. It is a pleasure to carry and comfortable to shoot.

I am a big Marlin fan. My sons middle name is Marlin for cripes sakes!!:D With that said if i was in the market i would buy an older one that is proven with lots of rounds down range rather than a new one off the shelf. From the other forums i haunt, it sounds like the "infamous" Marlin jam is becoming more predominant these days. In fact i recieved a PM from a member here yesterday that he is experiencing this flaw on a new stainless 336. I just love a well worked in 336RC from the fifties or sixties.

Yep you sure got some real Nice lumber on that 336 ! Congrats

I do have a few 336's and another on the way but here's my Favourite Marlin. It was also my Late Mother's...she took her 1st deer with it as a Teenager.
Been in my Family for a long time.
Model 1993, 26" rifle in the Dirty Thirty.
Well weathered and well used on the outside but the bore is Mint and it's easily the most accurate iron sighted 30wcf I own...plus that mag tube does hold a few rounds ! :D

It's a real Joy to have in the hand :)
(sorry the pup gets excited and figures we're going huntin when I get out a rifle;))

The 30 Glenfields are in fact Marlin 336's not clones. Everything is/was made off the same lines.....except as you noted they used cheaper non walnut stocks on them to reduce prices for these "trade rifles" They were sold by the big box stores like Walmart and such but are a 336 marlin in every sense of the word and some would argue they were the better buy for a no fuss hunting rifle:cool:

I just came into possession for a short time of a 336 about the same age and wear. Odd thing is it didnt have a ramped front site or the better rear sight. I knew the Glenfield was the same guts as a 336 cuz I had a parts breakdown from the Marlin site and all the parts were identical. Mag tube was shorter and the forestock was a blunt instead of recessed for the barrel band but have sold off the "project" gun and will put better sights-tang site maybe and play with some Leverevolution ammo. It can be reloaded now as Hornady has released the boolits in the last few months. Woo Hoo! If you google "peep sights" you get a full discussion of the various sights used and pros and cons for everything. Very informative site.

I came in here looking for info on Marlin levers since a guy at the range today let me try a few rounds through his 30-30. I loved it. The smooth and positive ejection and chambering was the sort of silky smoothness of parts that are very happy to be working together. That and it shot superbly. The pictures and stories of happy owners here is really pushing me to get one for myself.

Now that I've almost got all my gear together for IPSC pistol shooting I'm looking at steel silhouette shooting as something I can justify getting a rifle or two for. So the question is if I mount a scope to one will it be good enough for using it in steel silhouette shooting out to around 300yards?

Smooth..

Buy one, im sure with a good scope a 30-30 with LeverEvolution ammo could reach out to 300yrds, That might be the very extent of its limitations though. They seem like very nice guns, my new 336 is a bit rough to run the lever but I am hoping it gets smooth as butter over the years!! They dont have the very best blueing out there or the best fit finish, But for $500 you cant go wrong and they are 10X the gun a Win 94 is IMHO.

I have a new hunting friend for life, I love shooting the 30-30 and this Marlin 336 is the exact thing I pictured when I wanted a lever gun!!!

If you want abit more "reach" then the standard 30-30 stuff........Marlin chambers the 336's in the "new" 308 Marlin Express !
Certainly reaches 300 meters ! ;)
shop

I'd rather stick with a more common cartridge just for availability and pricing. I'll eventually start reloading them but in the meantime it would be nice to be able to just walk into the shop and buy a box or two when I need it. And from my quick checking Hornady isn't selling their new bullets yet.

I'll have to think about it but if I go with some other option for metal shooting then I may pick up one of the shortie versions in .357Mag and use it alongside my revolver for giggles. Who knows, it may even prod me into wearing a stetson and doing some cowboy action events... :D

Hey BCRider, copy that on the Cowboy Action. I belong to the Mission club and they have a real nice Cowboy Action range there. I have been around a couple of times to watch the events. Sure looks like an awful lot of fun. Everybody smiling:)

I'd be looking for a 336A with the 24" barrel minus the micro-groove rifling if it were me.I had a 336 and it shot only light handloads well. But all guns are individuals maybe I had a lemon.I have a buddies SS Guide 45-70 and it has the Marlin jam syndrom.....................Harold

Scope

Im bringing this post back to life, I am now interested in scoping my Marlin 336 in 30-30. I have the factory sights dialed in at 50yrds but it does leave something to be desired at 100 and 150yrds, not a great sight picture for accuracy.

I wanna scope it with something small for Ontario bush hunting this fall, something like a 2-6 or smaller. What do you guys reccomend I put on it for deer and bear? I want the low power setting to be 1.5 to 2ish power.

Another thought may be to get rid of those lousy factory irons and install aftermarket items such as XS sights (Ghost Ring). Those will work very well out to 150 yards provided the shooter has no problems with eyesight and does his part.

30-30

Ratherbfishing: It all depend on what you plan to use it for, I picked the 30-30 because I wanted a nice light bush gun that could take deer and bear and maybe the odd moose within 200yrds. The ammo is cheap and available evreywhere you could think of. Sure it isnt the newest magnum big boomer but I am willing to bet the 30-30 has taken the most whitetail in N/A over any other caliber, maybe not the 30-06?

The .35 Rem may be a better choice if it was going to be a "go to" moose gun aswell as deer and bear. But I have a 30-06 for moose, so the 30-30 was a natural choice.
