So I'm considering buying a Marlin 336 "RC" from the mid-50's. I've never heard of the "RC" model. is there any info on this rifle... google turned up nothing.

Thanks

Hi there , The ballard rifling has been reintroduced by marlin because of the cowboy shooters wanting to use all lead bullet . Accuracy with hunting bullets as good as micro grove .Some will pay extra to get a ballard rifling .

i bought mine a month ago. it's a 1950 336RC with 4 groove ballard rifling and the pot belly stock. I love it! it took a bit... no alot of cleaning and it shoots great now. super smooth action. i believe that the 336 RC production carried over into the microgroove era though which was about 1955 so it may not have ballard which alot of people would prefer. either way it is a beautifull rifle and i honestly prefer it's esthetics over the newer models. one key point to consider is that all early models from 1949 to i believe the early sixties were not drilled and tapped for scope bases.

Awwwwww this dang photo bucket.
I'll deal with it later from my laptop and see if I can bring up the
first photo.
Also found a flat top undrilled photo in my collection without the holes
and no wiggley lines.
Serial number starts with a "K" for anyone wishing to look it up.

This is the rifling on my 1975 Marlin 336 in 30-30.

And the rifling of my 1955 Marlin 336 in 35 Remington.
I do believe this receiver was factory drilled.

Trying to nudge my memory, then top of the receivers that have the sqwerly lines front to back are the ones that were not pre drilled?
Just prior to this 1955 I believe.

I bought a "RC" Marlin recently, most accurate rifle I own and I will never part with it. Does yours have the wavy "waffletop"? If it does not have a scope mount please do not drill, keep it original. Enjoy your shooter!

"RC" (regular carbine) 20" barrel full mag tube with barrel bands.
"SC" (sporting carbine) 20" barrel 2/3's mag tube no barrel bands.
"CS" (cross bolt saftey) 20" barrel full mag tube with barrel bands and CBS.

Nothing to do with micro groove or Ballard rifling. You have to use serial # or look down the barrel for that.
MG was put in the center fire rifles in 1955-56

Maybe I'm a Fudd but a cross bolt safety on a lever rifle is an absolute mechanical abortion to me. Legal liability is the issue, I guess, in our litigation happy society but it totally ruins a lever gun for me. x2 on the tang safety lever action hammer guns. The old RC and SC Marlins are super woods rifles and the quality is great.
