Marlin 336 sight options?

My parents got me a nice old 336 in 30-30 for Christmas and I really like it, but I'm thinking that the sights really need to go. I can't stand the buckhorn rear sight, and the front sight is a bit beat up.

I haven't decided yet if I want to go with irons or a scope, but I'm leaning toward a nice set of irons with a rear peep sight.
What kind of options are out there for irons, and what would you recommend?

If I decide to go with a scope, what kind of scope, rings, mount would you recommend?

Not sure yet if I'll end up using it for hunting, but if I do, it'll be for mule deer and/or whitetail in regions 3, 5, and 8 of BC.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kagia

Williams or Lyman peep sight if you want irons. A good 2.5x or 3x mounted low and over the bore is a good choice for the woods if you want a scope, I would forget about the see through mounts personally. They place your head in an awkward position, I find.

See through mounts suck. with the solid top of your marlin mounting a nice scope is easy. Or a nice peep far back on the action as possible. With the new "lever evolution" ammo the 30-30 is a whole new cartridge.

Looks like a nice old Marlin! Peep sight is the way to go and fairly inexpensive and easy to instal.
I like the Lyman peeps a bit better then the William if you want to use the side mounting option ( two small screws) and Skinner has some nice options for mounting on top. The skinner is not as easy to adjust quickly as the Lyman for windage and elevation it's more of a set and forget type sight.
Another optic option for your gun is an XS rail forward of the receiver that would allow you to use a peep at the back and a red dot or forward mounting scope ( red dots are fun to shoot with, quick and great in low light.)

Thanks for the replies, gentlemen.
Those of you recommending a rear peep sight, do you use yours for deer hunting? If so, at what distances?

I havent gotten mine out to field yet, but I just installed a set of Skinner sights on mine.

I got the Express sight, which sits slightly lower on the receiver than the standard version. I like the sleeker look of this unit.

They look nice, are very well built and were easy to order. They are more expensive than the Williams sights, but these ones will survive longer than I will. Its a once in a lifetime purchase.

If I were to order another set from Skinner, I might choose the standard sight because I find I have a cheek weld that is marginally lower than what I was using with the factory sights.

As for distance, I suppose that depends more on you than the sights. I find that iron sights serve me well out to about 200m. After that, I find it hard to focus my eyes so that I see the front sight and target clearly.

Even with a scope, I suspect most 30-30 shooters won't be shooting game much farther than that.

I do not consider my sights a limitation.
