Marlin 336 vs Mossberg 464

They are both inexpensive so buy both, then sell the one you don't like on the EE for a profit. My vote goes for the Marlin.

You may find the fibre optic sights on the mossberg 464 to be more to your liking than the marlin but the marlin I think has a better ejection system going for it.

Spoke to a lot of lever guys, ended up buying an old 336 (great shape) , probably going to last longer than a new one.

Marlin is the way to go, also heard good things about the Mossberg.

Marlin has flat receiver for scope mounting, side eject FTW.

Anyone know what a fair asking price would be for an older Marlin 336? I was also interested in the .357mag or .44mag Marlin. Having a rifle that can hold 10 rounds of .38 special with an 18.5" barrel would be pretty neat or 10 rounds of 44mag in a 20" barrel. I've been told that even though the Mossberg is top eject, it still ejects off to the right side rather than straight out the top. I don't plan on running a scope as of now but that may change in the future. Just want a fast rifle that I can react quickly to a running deer or bear in this thick woods I have around here. Almost impossible to pull off a shot further than 100 here.

I've seen them hovering 300 to 500 in the EE for the regular carbine (336RC or 30A) 30-30's. But I'm still learning.

44 mag is awesome, but I think the 30-30 fits your application perfectly. 10 rounds is fun for plinking, but for hunting its really not necessary. In the rare occasion where you would miss or need more than 6 + 1 shots to accomplish your kill, you can even plop new rounds between shots or while changing positions. One of the reasons I love levers.

I say just get what your heart wants, if you are stuck on the Mossberg, just get it. You'll never be done buying guns anyways, this is just a step into your journey. Just take care of your guns, and if you think you messed up, then sell on EE and move along. Or ever better, hang it up and buy another one.

The Moosberg SPX ( grandson Zombies rifle) is perfecty operational with a scope, with no problems, using the 160 gr FTX Leverevolution, the 30-30 is a better rifle... and accurate... JP.

The older Marlins without the safety are rare, but worth every penny if you happen to find one. The one I have is a near MOA shooter with Leverevolution. Probably would shoot better by I only have a straight 4x scope on it and it is good enough for my applications.

I got mine a few months ago for 325$ at my local store.
