Gotta say, I went into the local gun shop with a mind to buy one of those short barrel, big loop Marlins. I ended up walking out with a Henry 30-30 instead. Way nicer wood, ghost ring peep sight from the factory and the action is slicker than goose turds. Only thing is the funny way of loading the shells like an old tube magazine 22lr. You get used to it quick though.

I would go with the Marlin or look for a Winchester. But I have heard some very good reviews about Henry firearms.

I would go pre-Rem Marlin in .35 Rem. with the Ballard type rifling. The micro-groove barrels suck
for shooting lead.

Funny that is exactly how my cabinet turned out looking. A nice 20's SRC 30-30 and a 70's 336 35Rem.

I ended up buying a marlin, and happy about it. Feels solid and shoots like a champ. Its a pre-CBS. Side eject is perfect for me and the action is smooth as butter.
