Sold my 99e .308 in the 80s. Heavy, poor stock ergonomics, unpleasant to shoot, and jammed on occasion. My Marlins are very nice in 30-30 and 45-70...no complaints, with far superior/simpler actions than the Winchester 94. Not to hijack the thread here, but the best lever rifle I own (in every respect) is my BLR straight stock. JMHO.
All things being equal, if I were to choose between a Savage 99 and a Marlin 336, both chambered for .30/30, or say .30-30 and .303 Savage, I'd choose the Marlin. But if the 99 was chambered for the .300 Savage of the .308, that would be enough for me to tip the scale in favor of the Savage. Its been a long time since I've fired one, but I don't recall the 99C in .308 being all that unpleasant.
i have owned a couple of 99's in 308. one internal and one detatchable mag. far more versatile than a 30 30, reasonably accurate and accualy handle ok but too ugly for me. i would go for an older blr, better accuracy and nice to carry. easy to find in 308.
I own both,I prefer the 99. For looks,a slick action (really very clever) and they shoot better than my 336,although it does shoot pretty good. If you are planning on scoping it look for a 99 F model . Don't overlook the .300 savage a great cartridge. I own 4 99's,1 marlin and a BL22. I have owned 94's in the past and out of all the lever guns I own the 99 is my favourite.
H Wally, all I can point out with all the facts shown is that James Bond and Mack Bolan both used a Marlin. Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more, say no more.
