Marlin 336RC 30/30 versus winchester 94 pre-64 30/30

One of each.

A buddy gave me this one, a 1956 Winchester. With the peep sight it shoots like a scoped rifle at 100 yards.

I was given this one too, (a 1957) but it required a butt stock and a total frame-up restoration. I've since taken the scope off and put a vintage Redfield receiver sight.

This one has two inch groups at 100 yards. Not bad for a rifle that started out looking like this:

Actually I got to thinking of this because of the PCMR (pacific coast military rangers) and their being issued winchester 94's in world war two for coastal defence. In several of their journals it's mentioned that the nature of the fighting (close in forest fighting and ambushes) the win 94's were thought to be superior to the arisakas because of how many rounds they could hold, their hitting power at close ranges, their speed of fire and ability to top up the gun with a round in the chamber.

Yup, and having lived and packed my 94 through the same brush and hills for 6 years where the PCMR were first issued their rifles I have to say it was a damn fine rifle for their needs.

Furthermore as I have said before, with it's intermediate cartridge, variable rate of fire, and handy and reliable carbine design the Win 94 was the first assault rifle IMHO. :D

What you guys are basically telling me is that I should have one of each right?

Yup pretty much. :D
