I recently acquired a standard Marlin 336RC carbine which dates to 1949 and has a waffle top receiver.
At some point in its life, it has been given a treatment by a gunsmith who obviously knew what they were doing, as it has a beautiful checkering job on the stock and forend and (perhaps unfortunately) has been drilled and tapped for a scope.
The tapped holes are two in the rear of the waffle top receiver, and two in the barrel just ahead of the receiver, and are nicely filled with plug screws. Professional job for sure. I haven't measured the spacing yet but it appears normal for standard Weaver style bases.
The issue I have is that I have no idea who would have made the original scope bases for the period, which I assume was the 1950's. I imagine it was Weaver or perhaps Redfield but a search of the internet hasn't yielded much information at all.
The front base would have to be higher than the rear one, as the barrel is not on the same plane as the receiver. Therefore, the bases for standard receivers which are factory drilled and tapped wouldn't work.
Does anyone know what the period correct bases would be? And perhaps, if they are unobtanium or not?
Thanks a million!!
