Hi,

Hope someone can help. Recently bought a NEW 336SS in 30-30. I guide in Northern BC for three months in the fall so I'm in the saddle alot. The rifle worked fine for about a month and then it had bad feeding problems. I mean NOT feeding at all.
In this line of work in Grizzly country I cannot afford to have ANY feeding problems at all. If ya know what I mean.

So, When I put the rounds in the tube, pull the lever down, the bolt comes back and the feed tray drops, when I pull the lever back up the feed tray stays down. A guide friend of mine bought the same rifle and has now got the same issues. Has anyone heard of such problems or would know how to fix it?
Am using Factory loads and why would it work for a while and then all of a sudden after and month on a horse scabbord not feed at all?
Rifle is taken care of and not trashed. Now have to try and get this problem fixed before guide season. Any help would be greatley appreciated.

I have had similar problems from time to time with the Marlins. One thing to check is that all the screws are tightened. Seems that the screws on a new rifle will back out, possibly due to the shipping oil/grease. If the shell loading gate screw is loose, it interferes with the shell lifter, not allowing it to come up.

Thanks Gunrunner,

I'll check the screws. Ya when I raise the lever the bolt will come forward, lock up but the Carrier just flops around inside. When I turn the rifle over the carrier just moves up and down under no tension??

Check to see if the magazine tube has not moved forward a little. push it back and tighten screws, This causes a miss alignment of the shell as it comes out of the tube and you get a jam.

Had the same problem with my 336C today after putting 5 boxes of 30-30 down-range. After some internet searching, it seems that most people agree that a tightening of the load spring screw should fix the problem (I haven't tried it out yet though). I found an exploded diagram to help in the disassembly process just in case that doesn't fix the problem. The load spring and load spring screw are labeled in the diagram as well. Hope it helps.

marlin 336 feeding problem

I have a Marlin 336 30-30 with the same problem. In this case it is caused by the carrier rocker breaking. This is a small part attached to cartridge lifter and when the end is broken off there is nothing to make the lifter function. New part ordered today fron Western Gun Parts.

Hi. You have a 5 year warrantee. Contact Marlin. PHONE: 800-544-8892.
Don't even think about a .30-30 to deal with the odd chance of running into a griz.

Better than a sharp stick. My uncle ran a trapline in Peace River and shot several with a .32 Special. Not ideal but he died of old age not Grizzly......Harold
