New to the hunting scene, mostly just a rec sports shooter but Id like to get into hunting. Any ideas on a coyote gun would be great, bearing in mind i work for the navy so cost is a factor.

the 30-30 isn't too big its not ideal but it will work most people use smaller calibers like the .223, .222, .22-250, .220, .204 . . . ect. theres lots of them but anything bigger will work, the only problem with the 30-30 you might find is the distance factor, how far will you be shooting?

i would go .223 or .22-250 in a stevens 200, as mentioned above, and then get a good scope 3-9x40 or 3-9x50 would be fine for you if you only plan to shoot 150yrd max, any more questions feel free to ask

.243 Win. is my choice.

Little bit more power and distance, and a wide selection of bullet weights from 70 up to 105(if you reload) if I remember correctly.

And it does well on Deer as well. ;)

If you are looking for a target gun to shoot a lot at the range .223 will be cheaper though.

I used to sell the pelts for some extra cash. Is this still possible?

The little 223 with FMJ, full metal jackets ie. service ammo, will be kinder to the pelt and its value. The problem with dedicated small bores for a tight budget is yu need a second rifle for deer if needed. The 243 Winchester can do both. Used rifles in this caliber are common.

If your eliminating pests the 30-30 will do the job and double as a good 150 yard hunting rifle for deer and black bear. Lever actions are my favorite but the bolt action is likely to be more accurate.

get yourself a nice 6.5x55 swede -good for coyotes, good for deer, bear and moose. Its as close to the ''one gun''solution as you will get.Tradeex has a nice selection-and for another couple of hundred bucks you can get a nice M-8 6x leopold, the whole rig will leave you enough money left over from $500 to buy a couple of boxes of shells

Somewhat nervous on buyin tha swede, it looks great and sounds optimal but wouldnt that blow the hell outta a coyote, i want the pelt if a can find someone to treat it, and ammo availability is also a concern.

Canadian tire has 6.5x55 ammo. I have a tikka t3 is 6.5 and I love it. I don't think it would blow the hell out of it if you used a heavier bullet, like a 140gr and didn't hit major bones. The bullet would be a little tougher and a little slower and probably punch through pretty well.

I really think a 6.5x55 would do less damage than a .243. The .243 is a pretty hot little rifle. Velocity is way higher with smaller bullets than the 6.5 and I think you will find the super velocity causes more mess. I could be wrong but that's what I think.

If you are on a buget, SKS is a great Coyote rifle, and a 7mm mag does not cause a Coyote to explode with regular hunting bullets, but it sure turns them to jelly inside.

I would suggest a 7x57... you can take anything with it. For coyote, use FMJ... it will be kind on the pelt. For hunting deer and moose, there's an assortment of hunting ammo that would be very effective. Its not super high velocity, but it will reach out well beyond 300 metres and still be effective.
