marlin 39 lever

The 2000 minus thing dates Marlins from the 1970s or so onward. The serial number will have a letter or letters as a prefix in it prior to that, and you date them like 'looky did when that's the case. I used to have all this info some place but I think it died on a blowed up computer. ..

Marlin year of manufacture maybe determined from the following list of letter/numeral prefixes to the serial number:
1946-C
1947-D
1948-E
1949-F
1950-G
1951-H
1952-J
1953-K
1954-L
1955-M
1956-N
1957-P
1958-R
1959-S
1960-T
1961-U
1962-V
1963-W
1964-Y,-Z
1965-AA
1966-BB
1967-AC
1968-AD, -68
1969-69
1970-70
1971-71
1972-72
Starting in 1973, the year of manufacture maybe determined by subtracting the first two digits of the serial number from 100:
Example: SN 2512345 would have been made in 1975 [100 - 25 = 75].

Hi.
The MR on the serial number indicates that is a newer rifle made by Remington. The way to tell the date of manufacture is to check the code on the barrel near the receiver. The serial number no longer tells the date of manufacture.

To determine month and year of manufacture:for month: spell out the word " Black powder x" . B=January, L =February, A=March and so on.
The year is in alphabetical order with F =2011, G=2012, H= 2013. So if the barrel marking is PH it was made in June 2013. The month is the first letter and then the year. I have a new Marlin 39a made in June, 2013. It is a great rifle.

Are you sure the second letter is an R. Where is the Serial number on this rifle?
Can you take a picture without giving away any info to the seller?
Is there any contact with the lever that would alter a number to look like a letter if I recall my first model 39a.
I have yet to see a RemLin with the Remington coding.

Fwiw, I believe the newer guns that have serial numbers starting with "MR" are made in Illion New York, and the guns that start with MM are made in Mayfield Kentucky.
