Marlin 410 discontinued !

I spent alot of time with an Enfield that had been converted to .410. It had the original military sights and for all intent and purpose was a slug musket. Accuracy was quite good to 50 yards but the point of impact was no where near to what the sights were. By doing a little math I figured that the .410 slug load had about the same performance as a medium loaded .357 magnum cartridge. I feel the .357 projectile would out perform the soft lead slug of the .410 when applied to game shooting. Again wait for the perfect set of circumstance for the shot and it will work. But it could be a long wait.

cheers Darryl

We're getting a little silly now. Any calibre in the hands of any hunter who thinks one shot placed anywhere will destroy, is going to lead to many wounded animals.

Let's limit the effectiveness of the .410 slug (and any projectile for that matter) to the skills of an average, *responsible* hunter for the purposes of discussion. I think you'll find the slug is more than adequate. I'm not trying to say it's better than a 30-06 tho.

The point is, some calibres are better than others at performing certain tasks. However, I just feel the .410 is very underrated and would do just fine as a deer cartridge. The range may be shorter and it may be less accurate than the 06 lets say, but then so is an arrow fired from a 150lb bow. The thing with the .410 is that you almost have to fire it to appreciate it. ;)

whoa guys. I'm in the same boat and should never have compared with a 243. I hate buckshot and love levers. Someday when I'm old and my boys have all my 12 gauges in use I will take a deer with that little 410 from a treestand at the same ranges I bowhunt at.

Ballistics

Distance (yds) Velocity (fps) Energy (ft.lbs.) Trajectory (in.)
Muzzle 1830 651 -
25 - - .3
50 1318 338 0,0
75 - - -1.9
100 1025 204 -5.8
125 946 174 -12.0
150 - - -

Ballistics for a 2.5 inch .410 slug. Decent enough energy but I'd think penetration would be lacking, severely.

Discontinued? who cares? I have been shooting 2 1/2 .410 shot loads in my Marlin 45-70's for years, and they work great. You have to single load thru the ejection port, and the cases need a good full length sizing afterwards. ( I use a P+W 375.
