I have used a 410/22 Hornet in a Springfield Scout for several years as a canoe gun. The 410 with #6's will take Grouse to 25 yards pretty handily. With 1/4 oz slugs by Federal it will group into 5" to 40 yards or so. The 110 grain slug will hit hard enough to take a deer in an emergency but has way less power than a 30-30. Personally I even prefer the 22 Hornet option as with 50 grain Sierra handloads at 2100ft/sec they penetrate better than the 410 slug.
The Marlin 336 in 30-30 is a fine outfit fully capable of 2" 100 yard groups with the correct ammo.
The 30-30 is an undersung hero with sufficient power for 200 yard big game and excellent bullet performance.
As compared to the 110 grain slug even in 3" guise the 410 will max out at 1800ft/sec. The 30-30 with the same bullet weight will go 25-2600ft/sec. 170 power points will consistently expand to 50+ caliber and hold a signifi#### penetration and wound channel advantage over the little .410 slug.
In recent wet phone book tests the 170 grain bullets at 2100 would penetrate as well as some loadings in 358 Norma but of course cause much less trama.
So for grouse to rabbits the 410 has some utility to 20-25 yards. For any other use get the 30-30.
