I have a marlin 444s....IMR 3031 powder and 265 gr hornay fp
I searched everywhere I could. found that my starting load was about 50 and max is 53. this is way too high I started at 46 and am getting compressed loads. what should my starting load be and my COL.

as well I got variations in brass trim length. 2.2"-2.25"

PLEASE HELP.

I have a Marlin 444S as well and the 265gr Hornady is my jacketed bullet of preference. The load I've been using for quite a few years is close to what you've made mention of. Actually, from my records, I'm using 52.8grs of IMR 3031. I'm not sure but I'm guessing that was a load I found in an earlier edition of the Hornady manual as I notice that in the newer ones they don't list that powder in the 444. I don't recall experiencing any difficulties. Sorry but I can't help you with a maximum or minimum but if I was starting out to load for it now, most likely my choice of powder would be something like IMR 4198.
The Hornady manual lists a maximum case length of 2.225" and suggests trimming to 2.215". Also, they list the C.O.L. with that bullet at 2.560". Again, the above specs are what I go by and I haven't had a problem. It may be an idea to get a friend that reloads to look "things" over for you.

I am super stumped..I am using a trim length of 2.215" so i'm good there.
i'll have to check the calibration of my scale maybe. but to be out by so much is a little scary.

switch to h4198. start at 42grn and work up to 46grn with the h 265fp.. no compression problems and great accuracy. velocity should be arround 2200 to 2300 fps depending on barrel lenth. i get almost 2300 cronyed in my marlin microgroove 22 inch barrel

i was just thinking of getting some h4198.

a member of another forum also suggested h4227. commonly used in 44 rem mag. or other pistols. anyone use pistol powders in the'r 444?

H335 works fantastic in mine.
