Marlin 45-70 Dilemma.

How's that cheap scope holding up to the recoil?
Put a cheap scope (think it was a Tasco) on a full length Marlin 1895 I previously owned and it didn't do too good.
Think it lasted for about 10 shots of 430 grain Buffalo Bore 45-70 ammo.
Sold the rifle. It kicked like a mule in fly season.

Like he said, there are still a lot of the older stock still on the shelves. I was in Cabela's a week ago and looked at an 1894 in 44mag, it was pathetic compared to my late 90's guide gun. Wood finish was so bad it loomed water damaged, "checkering" so poor that it would be better to just not bother and the wood metal fit was not too great. Metal work looked passable but did not get to cycle it.

Maybe the new ones are better ( hope so) but I have not seen one in person yet that did not have some sort of major flaw, and I have handled a lot in the last couple years looking for one of these rumoured improved models.

I really want to get a 22" 1895 but until I handle one that is the same quality as my older one I'm not tossing $800+ at a gun with Norinco quality finishing.

Not really.
I've handled a few of the newer REPs or Remlins that varied from barely acceptable to noticeably flawed but functional to defective junk.
Still haven't found one that I'd pay the -$750 asking price for.
Looking for a good used JM 1895 or 1895G without the muzzle brake.
The guys that own them are keeping them because they're very scarce.

I'm still wary. I worked in a gun shop from 2009-2012. I remember opening Marlin boxes right off the truck and having screws come rolling out. I remember getting a shipment of twelve 39A rifles. 11 were taken out of the box and put right back in to ship to the repair center. DOA.

I'm truly sorry to hear about your dilemma there Quigly, it sounds terrible. I truly hope everything works out for you.

The only sound advice I can give you in a time like this is that you should go for it and never look back. Down the road if this problem should ever arise again, please use my advise, it has worked for me in the past.

This is a true dilemma that many of us go through in silence and we shouldn't have to. Maybe we should have a sticky here for all that suffer from this exact problem. Everybody goes through this and has gone through this at one time or another and IT HAS TO STOP!

Some of the first guns made by the new Ilion NY factory were junk and are still in the pipeline.
If you can find a good used 'JM' stamped Marlin that's the way to go.

Could it be because you were firing 430 grain bullets at a moderate velocity out of it.:confused:

Yes it is very tempting. I have come close to buying one, but was turned off, because there were reports that the accuracy wasn't that good. How is the accuracy on yours?
Just looking at the 500 grain bullet makes my shoulder hurt.
 
3.5" of barrel is absolutely reason enough to purchase a second rifle in the same cartridge. Hell that's almost a whole different gun...........then there is the 26" cowboy after you get the 22" all sorted out.
I have probably close to a dozen 30 WCF all in different configurations of the 94, 64, 55, etc. etc. etc..........no shame in that what-so-ever. I even have several 30-06s and I won't even hunt with this cartridge.
Every different rifle has it's own personality even in the same cartridge..........just like women, except they don't squabble if you have two or more, in the same cabinet at the same time.....;);););)

My No.1 .45-70 groups around 1 MOA at 100 meters off the benchrest with the right handload. I have a 2 other No.1 rifles and have no issues with accuracy with any of these.


Loads can always be backed off if recoil is an issue.

I have owned two No. 1s and both were very accurate. Definitely in the top 1/3rd of the many hunting rifles I have owned.
