Off the bench, with heavier loads it can be a bit of thumper, but in hunting situations I don't recall any issues at all. No different then shooting a .270Win or .338WM... I say that because when I am shooting at game, I am so focussed on the animal and the shot, that I don't feel the recoil or hear the muzzle blast or any of that.
Velocity:
I get 2025 fps MV with 350gr Hornady FN. H-4198 I forget the load.
I am pushing 1700 fps MV with 400gr bullets. I've fired Hawk; Remington (405gr) and Speer. I'm going to go with the 400gr Hawk bullets. I likes 'em. The 400 gr load is 52.5grs H-4895.
I think up to 1800 fps MV is okay; I shot my black bear in the spring with a Speer that was loaded to 1800 fps. The probelm is the bullets are not designed to handle that velocity. That Speer opened up like a pop can. It turned inside out!
