marlin 45/70 guide gun options

Ive finally saved enough money to buy the guide gun!!!

couple q's...

is the triugger on them fine or is the wild west trigger a good upgrade.

and also from wild west. the bear proof ejector.... what are the benifits of this... is the factory one not good enough....

and i wish I knew someone with the FP336 peep sight or should i just go ghost rings... I would perfer whatever one is more acurate... I like scopes but not on this gun!

I plan on shooting this gun as much as possible and will we reloading amo as I just got my new rcbs rock chucker kit!

wheres the cheapest place to get new and or used 45/70 brass??

I never had an issue with the trigger on my marlin. it;s not a target trigger, but on a guide gun, do you really need a light crisp trigger? it's nice, but not nessisary.

put 300 full power loads (350gr FN @ 2150fps) through mine, in a few "gun used as intended" situations. never had anything fail to eject. I don;t know anyone that has had ejection problems with their guide guns.

I have a Set of Williams peep sights on my marlin. LOVE them. you can leave the small peep in for hunting, and unscrew it for Ghost ring style setup. the Ghost rings serve a purpose, but I didn't find them as percise for hunting applications as I would have liked.

of all the options the peep is the essential one.

the happi-trigger is nice if you're doing target work or want to use open sights past 200 yards. if you're going to use stiff loads ( ie way more than factory loads which are well below what the gun can handle for this gun the ejector might be a good idea.

one spare part I would get is an extractor.
 
I am going to buy one too! Glad to hear answers to these questions. Glad to hear about the Williams peep sights...I'll have to get me a set. :)

i picked up some new starline brass direct from the company in the usa, and it ended up cheaper---with all taxes and duties then winny brass from wholesale sports!.......also, i'm with amphib, for hunting i have no problems with the trigger or ejecting the cases!....enjoy the new gun!!...larry:)

how hard is it to work on the hood amphibious...

can I get a couple pics of yours maybe a side shot.... is it easy to get off the gun?




you can get brass from the usa and have no problems getting it across the border??

the hood slides off, just push it with your thumb towards the muzzle. look at the bottom section. you'll notice one side has a bump. this is important as the hood only fits one way. this bump helps lock it in place.

I use a dremel and a little cut off wheel to do mine. use a set of calipers and some masking tape to make sure everything looks even before cutting. do not take to much off. I did. and the hood does not fit tight enough for my likeing anymore. so look at the pics and take off a bit less, should still work. I cold blued the exposed steel after giving it a good scrub in simplegreen. cosmetically fixes it, but never lasts long. here is a pic: (I'm just heading out the door for a trip, will take you some more pics when I get back, camera is packed)

Hey Amphibious,

Do you suppose that when you return you could post some pictures of your whole rifle for me to see? I'm itchin' for a blued Guide Gun, but all that's available for me to look at locally are the stainless ones. I mean they are gorgeous, but I think I want a blue one. :rolleyes:

Anyone have that stronger extractor? How much work was involved in installing it? The one i found online said it needed to be installed by a gunsmith.

WildWest Guns makes the one piece ejector, as well as the Happy Trigger kit. I have the trigger kits in my 3 Marlin 45-70"s. They are fabulous. The ejector costs about 30 USD and you can put it in yourself. In all my years, I've never heard of one breaking, so I never put one in.
Look at either the Pachmayr or Limbsaver prefit recoil pads though, your shoulder will thank you.

.45-70 OR .450 Marlin?

I mentioned this above, but in the case of a handloader...aside from the possibly more expensive and less common brass; is there any other reason to go with .45-70 chambering instead of .450 Marlin?

I'm not concerned about being able to use a "commonly available" factory load (like the .45-70). When I buy my Guide Gun I will also stockpile sufficient brass for it's chambered caliber. Is there any advantage to the .450 Marlin brass? Perhaps in a way, it would be good to be able to buy the occasional box of "hot" factory loads as is available with the .450.

Your thoughts - esteemed shooting brethren? :)

Someone once told me "Never hunt with a caliber that is younger than you".

I think the 45/70 is just cool since it was developed in 1873 and is still going strong! The 45/70 has quite a history!

As for brass, my understanding is that the two are almost identical, with the .450 being belted to prevent it from being chambered in a 45/70!

If you are comfortable handloading then the 45/70 will do everything the .450 can. If you want stronger loads without handloading then the .450 is for you.

Thanks. I saw an article that shows the sectioned cases, and the .450 Marlin has a much thicker wall close to the case head and thicker case head as well. Whether this is needed or not is debatable.

I got my Stainless guide gun today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...
I was going to get blued but they were out of stock and Ive always liked the stainless one and it happened to be the last one a the lethbridge wholsale... It was also 5% off!!!!! Everything else in the store was 10% of so I picked up some rcbs dies and misc other stuff.... great day....

I was also at wholesale sports today, oh well good thing you got the last one as I should be using that money for things like find a place to live, food, gas.........:( I just ended up getting a couple boxs of stingers for the .22 and tried on a few of the purdy hand guns on for size....... must...... resist...... a little longer!

ranger rick, tell me about the trigger, is it simply a nice light trigger or does it take the slack out of the equation? approximate price? canadian seller?

lookout, I bought mine direct from Brownells in the states. I believe it cost me 89.99 USD plus shipping. This price seems to be about the same all over. I tried to buy directly from Wild West guns in Ancorage Alaska, but they don't have the export permits that Brownells has.
That being said, I have one of the Gun Digest books on firearms disassembly, and once read, it takes about 10 minutes. The one thing I'll tell you is do it before you mount a scope on it as it would have to come off in any case prior to doing the swap.
The trigger kit eliminates the dreaded Marlin trigger flop that occurs when the hammer is cocked, and lightens the pull to a crisp 2.5 to 3 lbs.

I know a lot of guys balk at the price, feeling they can get a gunsmith to do the same for less dollars. However, from the ones I've talked to, they are not too fussy about it because it's something they don't do a lot of, and to strip and put it together several times is lengthy. Also there is the wait time for them to do it.

My .02 worth.
